Breakfast Burrito

In my dreams!

Hey all — Farley Elliott from Eater LA. Love all the breakfast burrito talk!

A few things:

  • The maps are not ranked. We occasionally, as Euno said above, group the by neighborhood, but that’s it. We also do alphabetically a lot, and try to notify readers that there is no ranking to the numbers.

  • As for neighborhoods, we hear this a lot. The truth is we can’t cover every corner of greater LA every single time we write a post or update a map. We actually did an entire week dedicated to the San Gabriel Valley last year for those who think our SFV coverage is lacking, and we spend lots of time in the SGV, South Bay, and beyond.

  • For map updates: We don’t change every map point every time we re-run a map, usually it’s somewhere between 4 and 10 points changed. The ones that stay on the map get an eyeball look-over and sometimes a refresh, but it’s not always necessary when discussing concrete facts like ingredients or menu items.

  • Got a place you think we left off? Of course you do. Feel free to email: la@eater.com. We’re always around.

Yep, that sounds about right for Eater coverage of the San Fernando Valley… :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Well, that’s what I get for writing this quickly while standing in line at the bank. San Fernando Valley Week, obviously – apologies for the mistype, and thanks for reading!

To be clear on this, since some have asked: I’m not an FTC frequenter (though I probably should become one), and I just created my account yesterday to (I thought) answer some honest questions about what the Eater process is like. I’m looking forward to reading more and getting to know folks here when I can, and as always I’m just an email away: farley@eater.com

And as to one comment about not including FTC in this story yesterday:

It wasn’t meant to be a comprehensive look at ALL corners of possible restaurant information, that would be functionally impossible to gather in one place. This was more of an overview on food writing in particular, though I know there are some very intelligent restaurant-loving folks here, and great writers among them. As I said, I’m looking forward to reading more.

The breakfast burrito at the new Doubting Thomas is very very good.

Made with braised pork shoulder and smoked chili. Get a double chunk chocolate chip cookie to go, it’s worth the extra 30 minutes on the treadmill.

Just consumed one.

good size, great looking tortilla

the good : tortilla, eggs, avocado, the tots were good, a tad soggy but prob due to the ride
the meh : if youre gunna put chewy meat in a burrito, do yourself a favor and cut it up so you’re not pulling chunks of the innards with you with every bite. the red salsa was very meh, and the kick sauce was kinda off putting, didnt really get it
the bad : i dont really like sauteed onions n peppers in a burrito, esp a bfast one but thats on me for ordering it that way, they just didnt add anything imo.
overall : not bad, big burrito but not cheap, could be improved with some choppier meat and a better salsa real quick

I love that I posted this thread. My new favorite, by far is Colfax. The ones I mentioned above suck compared to it. Also, still need to try Lucky Boys. I’m sure it’s delish.

With lucky boys (which I love) its delicious but in a packed with food and nostalgic kind of way be sure to ask for extra green salsa. I wouldn’t expect it to compare in quality to a place like colfax.

It’s more in the vein of the hat, original tommys, or even mcdonalds breakfast. Meaning that it reminds me of foods that I used to eat a ton when I was young (basically unhealthy, microwavable, and fast food), it’s heavy, greasy, filling, and tastes pretty damn good if you have the right expectations.

I agree on the Cofax burrito. The smoked potatoes really level it up.

Hard pass. It isn’t even average, which I find most breakfast burritos.

If CoFax has it, get the Ugly Drum smoked sausage breakfast burrito, it is by far my favorite from them.

Lowkey Burritos makes a good one:

Thanks for bumping this up! Breakfast Burritos are kinda default at work breakfasts so I haven’t really been trying many as of late,… But the Hot Take post reminded us that we haven’t been to Chori-Man’s place in San Pedro yet… so last week we made the trek…

Although I was planning to get a Breakfast burrito… When I saw he had a Chile Relleno Burrito… I had to order. I mean… the batter has egg… I did not regret my decision. Both the burrito and the chile relleno came out PIPPING HOT. The cheese had a wondeful pull and the chile just enough heat. A sprinkling of beans and his green chorizo. His Green Chorizo is a bit light in flavor, especially compared to Ochoa. But it suited this taco well when you really wanted it to add to the burrito… not take over…

But if you love a pork bomb… P ordered the Argentinian in the breakfast burrito and although we were expecting a milder chorizo it was only that in terms of heat, not of flavor. Garlic and Fennel came CLEAN through. The egg was also surprised, it was a fried egg! Perfectly cooked with crisp edges… the burritos were big but not over stuffed, so it gushed just as much up as down. In fact, it held together surprisingly well! The other bonus were the crispy potatoes in the burrito. Super crisp bits of russets. They totally reminded me of the crispy smashed potatoes I love from Revolutionario.

A bonus of the visit was to check out Colossus bakery next door. I had an excellent Latte and we shared a savory flat bread. We picked up some other goodies, but in our running around in the day misplaced them. So we will have to be back to explore more…

Finally, Chori-Man was also having a special of Chili, which we took to go. Sadly it was a bit thin and quite greasy. The flavors were good, but not impressive. My favorite place for a cup of Chili remains Crustees in Ladera.

–Dommy!

I agree this is the best breakfast burrito, and honestly it is so hefty that two can comfortably split it. The use of the fried egg rather than scrambled is a nice touch, having the yolk ooze throughout the burrito.

It’s 2 meals easily. Saved one mini burrito for second morning at the office. Reheats well

What’s in the ugly drum? Never have seen it.

Sometimes, that’s all I need. Cheap, filling and good enough. Don’t want to always drop $15 at cofax. That is why La Azteca is good. STILL need to try lucky boys…one of these days.
