The one category that has evaded him is the style of (old school “kinda”) Chinese dishes that one was able to find at the cafes attached to the bowling alleys (Jefferson Bowl, Crenshaw Bowl,
I remember those spots. Did he mention Yee’s on Slauson? They had the red, candied like pork ipse mentioned, the super crispy, greasy egg rolls with as much ground pork as cabbage. It was just wrong… and I loved it!

We didn’t get that deep into the subject, but that whole realm of Chinese-ish food from that era is what he missed. I haven’t seen him since this thread startedd so I’ll have to save this rec in my pocket for him.

Yee’s is still there though I don’t know if they make the bbq pork the same way these days. And of course there’s the bulletproof glass.

Oh yeah. I remember they moved or remodeled. Yes, bullet proof glass :anguished:. I think there was a shooting some years back.

I bet it doesn’t taste the same, either to my (somewhat) more mature palate or just in general. It’s a shame the Panda’s probably effected places like that. Plus people are getting more savvy or snobby (if you will) when comes to Chinese and every other type of food.

I’m looking forward to Chubby Rice. They have a 4-1/2 rating on Yelp. Which is kind of amazing. Because the ratings/reviews for Chinese food are usually all over the map confusing.

Which is a full star better than Sea Harbour’s Yelp rating!

Tough crowd in SGV - very very tough.

Missed this thread when it first started (not sure why, since the title is vaguely pornographic… ;)).

But I just wanted to point out how remarkable @chandavkl’s post is. To be able to list the history of a location (while also answering a question about a specific style of food) is really extraordinary, and we’re very lucky that David shares his knowledge w/ us.

That’s interesting. It makes sense. The ratings always do seem so varied and random.

Yee’s is disgustingly bad. Is chubby rice like yee’s?

Not at all.

You order through bullet proof glass.

Were you expecting something else?

luv it…the glass is not to protect against hold ups but angry customers!

I never meant to suggest otherwise.

Who in their right mind would ever hold-up an old-school, American-Chinese food joint. Yee’s would have to sell enough $7.35 lunch specials to feed an army of Michael Phelps in-training to make it worthwhile.
We weren’t comparing Yee’s to Chubby Rice. We were reminiscing about the old-school Chinese places in the area back in the day. When I used to eat there we were kids. What did we know?
Funny… But believe it or not, the place used to be really popular. It’s probably over 40 years old.

If I recall, someone was killed in the shooting. It was pretty sad.

I grew up eating Yee’s. Had it about 5 years ago…will never return. lol

It’s probably the bulletproof glass. The original location across the street didn’t have the glass and it was pretty good. Also don’t forget that the new Yee’s then became Jim’s for a number years before reverting to Yee’s, so possibly in the interim years they forgot what they were doing.

Yeah… It’s weird, you don’t think about things for years, then something triggers it. I do remember eating at Yee’s after they moved into the sterile looking place w/bulletproof glass. As both you and @chandavkl wrote, it didn’t taste the same. But I won’t even say how long ago it was… a lot more than 5 years . What I remember most was the egg roll, which I loved. It was terrible.

Maybe the family sold it after the shooting. It’s amazing they’re still finding enough customers to stay open.

Sorry for off-topic folks. Back to Chubby Rice!

@chandavkl are there any other eating establishments you are aware of in SoCal with bulletproof interior decorations? Chinese, or otherwise?
