March 2019 Weekend Rundown

Bangbangbang: Start with egg/ham sando at Olympic Bakery as appetizer, then head across the intersection for main courses with Bistro Na, then SweetHoney to get your dessert on…

I tried Sweet Honey once in the town I live in and wasn’t very impressed. Maybe I should give them another go. Which dessert was your favorite of the lot?

This place is serviceable if you’re into the HK style desserts. I liked the pancakes but they’re quite pricey for what it is.

I’ll probably go back to try some other stuff.

Does Phoenix Bakery also do HK style desserts? If so, I’m ambivalent but might be willing to try Sweethoney, if it’s that close to me (and Sawtelle is super close).

Are you referring to the Chinatown institution?? They serve mostly baked goods and cakes. The Phoenix I was referring to is a different one that has many branches.

Get the black sticky rice young coconut, mochi, rolls, soy custard, steamed egg with milk, pomelo sage pudding…

Yes, the non-institution Phoenix! Thanks for the clarification.

I might’ve also misunderstood @J_L’s post. Is there a Sweethoney on Sawtelle, or only in Alhambra?

There are several locations but the one I went to is in Alhambra.

Shoot my bad. I had a brain fart. I was thinking of MeetFresh instead of SweetHoney…

It is good? And is that bowl the one thing they sell?

Lots of Taiwan desserts here

Finally got to try Khinkali House in Glendale.

The dried beef with butter. Same idea as duck confit, use the fat to preserve

Dried sausage and salami

We loved the chicken in walnut sauce. The sauce was divine

Got one each of the dumplings. Cheese, mushroom and beef. Fried.

Steamed

Fun new flavors for us.

Earlier in the month, we stopped at one of our homey favorites, Hummus House in Hawthorne.

I usually get a wrap there but finally tried their lamb burger. It was juicy but underseasoned for me.

We also like their broasted chicken a lot. The skin and batter is nice and crisp, but they overcooked it slightly this time and not as juicy as usual.

Also got some hummus, babaghanoush and kibbe. Their pita isn’t the best but it’s better than the usual cold flat bleh pita a lot of places serve. Their actually has some fluff and they bring it out warm.

This past weekend I was in Vegas for March Madness. Tried Mabel’s in Palm’s casino. Michael Symon’s new place.

Got the brisket, pork belly, pig tails and pig ears. The brisket was solid, light on the smoke flavor but tender and bark was good. Pork belly was also really good. Pig tails fried right, not greasy but it’s definitely not light. Pig ears, crispy and crunchy.

Go Hyang Jib (Norwalk)

Southeast Los Angeles County. This is my hood growing up. Cerritos, Artesia, Bellflower and Norwalk (and neighboring OC cities) has a delicious mix of Chinese, Korean, Indian, Thai, and Mexican. Kinda like taking the 91 all the way to the South Bay where they too have their own delicious mix of a variety of cuisines that is unique to that area.

Strip mall tasty

Got the combo, pick a soup/stew and pick a protein. Glancing at the menu it looks like soondae/blood sausage is one of the House specials. A little iron and zinc!! So I got the kimchi jigae and a plate of the soondae.

The banchan was fine. But I knew coming in here that they were known to offer marinated crab as part of their banchan (probably no refills). To my disappointment today they didn’t have any! Damn bad timing! They were generous with the refills and I love how they just plop down a thing of water on the table. And even better when compared to my peoples in 626 SGV, most Korean restaurants take card!

If I was to compare to 8th Street Soondae in Ktown, I might give a slight edge to 8th Street but this is a very satisfying meal!!! I’ll be back as well as exploring other hole in the wall Korean joints in this part of the County.

I am open to other recs for Korean in this area.

I was a big fan of Cho Dang Tofu House on Artesia blvd when I used to work in the area. Haven’t been in a few years though. Even had free soft serve machine!

Churros Don Abel (Whittier)

Bought another tray of 50 following a great happy hour at Clearman’s Steak ‘N Stein. I love that place. 10 were sent off for my brother to share with his fiancée. This is part of the remainder that was split between us, the chowpups, and my sister.
