New Food Editor at LA Weekly

Her work experience seems to be as a photo editor.

What happened to food reviewers being anonymous? Is that not a thing anymore?

she’s the editor

i don’t make it a priority to read the weekly. i don’t think that will change.

so she’s not going to be writing any reviews? Just editing other people’s reviews?

Probably editing out free contributor reviews.

But not a fan so far, definitely didn’t care for the name dropping. I will probably continue to boycott LA Weekly as a publication.

Yes, atrocious. The writing is terrible. Jonathan Gold. Besha Rodell. This.

“I’ve been obsessed following Susan Feniger and her travels to China, which have been translated to her Freshwater Dumpling and Noodle House at the historic Huntington Library — a highlight at the Essentials event.”

Look at that sentence.

I did.
I blinked.
I shuddered.
I reread it.
It remained abysmal.
I went and comforted my soul with chocolate.

Disconcerting to think she’s going to be editing the work of others.

Or, whatever…

Yes. Short version: Weekly was sold to an initially anonymous group, which proceeded to decimate reporters and editorial staff.

Lots of details and links in this thread, following the comments about Besha leaving:

We’ve done the same: haven’t grabbed a copy since bloodbath and will not do so for the foreseeable future.

Delightful use of the word “I”. Unlike the new food editor at L.A. Weekly.

:+1:  I’ve only picked up one, which was because of a “re-purposed” article.

Except for food stuff posted by Food Talkers I haven’t read it in a while. As posters have said, the online format is a pain. But for years the paper was a must read. You could find everything food-wise and everything going on musically in L.A. big or small.

Totally un-food related, but their articles on the unsolved Grim Sleeper crimes were riveting. I think they were responsible for putting pressure on the LAPD. Do they do that kind of reporting anymore?

Do they currently do any reporting?

I picked up a copy out of curiosity when I was in LA the other week and at least one of the stories was recycled from a year ago with no indication that it was a rerun.

I guess not. That’s too bad.

It shouldn’t be surprising what has happened. The descriptions about the previous owner, VMG, are all about SEO, digital advertising, paid media, pay-per-click advertising, etc. - nothing about journalism.

Oh well, we still have Los Angeles Magazine. Not weekly, less gritty, but still really good.

Okay, I’ll stop now. Bye Felicia.
