SF - is there any obscure place that we shouldn't miss

I know there are people that like it - it’s pretty well liked in the press and it was able to get a Michelin star, after all. However, it’s just not my style of Chinese food. I personally found that at Mister Jiu’s and China Live, whose food is kind of a luxe New American-inflected Chinese, some execution and tastes were a bit off, and there were a few faux-pas, at least compared to what I associate with more traditional preps of Chinese dishes. For something kind of similar to (though admittedly a bit different than) that style, Hakkasan does a bit better of a job in my opinion. I also don’t think Mister Jiu’s really meets the “off the radar,” “not super expensive” lunch criteria OP was looking for. Just a difference of opinion.

No problem. Plus I think this can help others.

La Marsa - get the ratatouille with egg crepe

Homage - chicken tartine and breakfast burrito are diversion worthy

robberbaron - start and end your meal with the “baronbar”

Mr. Jiu’s is mostly Cal-cuisine riffs on Chinese-American classics. Not traditional at all, or trying to be. Kind of vaguely like Majordomo. Haters gonna.

Somehow I thought you posted regularly in the LA category. If you’re in the mood for Korean:

My Tofu House is great and absurdly cheap. Soondobu specialist. Oddly, no alcohol.

First Korean Market in the same block makes some of the best kimchi I’ve ever had.

Han Il Kwan used to be excellent. Cheap lunch specials. Haven’t been there for a few years but I doubt it has changed much. Good to make a reservation as sometimes a bus or two full of Korean tourists show up and the place is packed.

Toyose is a fun soju bang way the hell out in the Sunset. The chicken wings are excellent, other stuff is hit and miss.

Burmese Kitchen is the best of the Burmese places. They’ve expanded their menu so (as with the better-known Burma Superstar) if you’re not careful you could end up with Indian or Chinese dishes.

El Buen Comer. I don’t know if this is “obscure” but the menu sounds good. ???

Noooooooooooooo!!! I just checked to make sure they’re open on Monday. They’re CLOSED!!! Called the # and it was disconnected. Where can I get great chicken feet at 9AM on Christmas morning??? J/K but we’re crushed. We’ve been going there a long time. Sigh. Guess we’ll have to ‘settle’ (hahahahahah) for Dragon Beaux

Stopped in after lunch today. They now have the cotechino year round! I’m SO happy.

Here’s a review of Angkor Borei I wrote a few years ago. I’ve been going there for I think 30 years, always great, unlikely to change until the longtime owner retires.
