CH LA schadenfreude thread

i’m still lurking there and it was painful to read a thread from an out of towner wanting recommendations for pho & banh mi in west LA. my resolve not to post was tested even further when they asked for recommendations for getting to and around K-town without a car and no one has bothered to mention that k-town covers about 3 square miles.

Parigi. Good to see you here!

I’m not entirely sure some of them weren’t admin trolls to gain hits and responses.

There was a period a few months ago where multiple first time users kept baiting with “NYC vs LA” posts.

Heck, maybe Bacoman was an admin/professional troll. #genius

He surely was Portos.

it doesn’t reflect the reality, as i know it.

to my eyes, there was an exodus afoot WELL BEFORE the new site design.
the flames coming from the SITE TALK board were volcanic well before the new site design was introduced.

imho, the site design change was just the straw that broke the camel’s back

Marsy in real life probably some al Capone/jabba the hutt kind of dude catfishing hounds. Those dimples still reek of sinister bullshit.

Porthos: nice to see your name again. I have been wondering what happened to you.

I think all epicures and all good cooks share the pleasure of … sharing. If we find good eats, steering others to this pleasure is very much part of the pleasure.
Once in a while I see a thread that does give me the urge to reply, threads that concern the markets in France and countryside eats, areas that don’t get a lot of feedback, but we’re talking really about once in a while, once in a long long while.

I think my disillusionment took roots slowly but surely quite a while before the redesign. I enoy reading my friends’ posts, but I don’t miss the site as is.

As for the redesign, it is such a spectacular own-goal that the feedback and the mods’ replies fascinate me. The wealth of the site is its content, which means all your contributions. The contributors have been exploted and betrayed for some time now. It is only mae more evident with the redesign.

it seems to me that a large part of the motivation of pursuing any new knowledge/revelation is the pleasure of sharing it with others, though some may take more pleasure in being viewed as an expert (and it being about them) while some are motivated more by sharing the joy of discovery. i’d like to think that hounds fall largely into the latter category, though i must admit that reading about the joys of a meal that might cost more than some hounds make in a day or two makes me wonder a little bit.,

I would not go into a class struggle about this. Some epicures are not necessarily well-off but will actually save up for a worthy meal, and I respect that and am happy to read their experience.
However, some hounds are obviously into elitism or some kind of crusading, which has nothing to do with pleasure. Especially some of the wine talk, I find it unreadable. Pardon my (considerable) prejudices.

you may have inferred it, but i did not make it about class/strata. if i had to categorize it, i’d make it more about narcissism, actually. or perhaps provincialism.

You left out jealousy and envy.

perhaps. but in this context i would see them as more a response than a motive. if you want to use therapeutic vernacular, all symptoms are over-determined, that is to say, in any given case, the obvious thing most likely applies, but more often than not, there’s something else going on underneath the surface.

because of that, while i’m capable of plenty of snark when prompted, i hope it’s clear that for any perceived snark in my posts, it’s not entirely genuine, but also not totally irrelevant.

Feels like that to me.

Great to find you all again!

I jumped on the CH LA board yesterday, just to get a “reality check” - awful ! It just feels completely different now, and not in a good way.

I’m very happy that FTC exists now !

The gospel according to Georges…

  • Full 360 management of the business unit
  • Managed all aspects of P&L, business and product strategy and day-to-day operations
  • Developed a new vision to drive growth via a content platform for users seeking to get more into food
  • Aligned Product/Engineering/Community/Editorial to the new strategy and increased traffic by more than 20% YoY
  • Streamlined the Editorial process to increase content production 5x while maintaining cost under control and achieving profitability on the editorial content
  • Merged the Chow and Chowhound brands into a single unified property from both a user and technology stand point
  • Restructured the team and made key hires to execute on this vision

Sounds like a proven leader.

He’s hired.

Even if he’s a bullshit guy.

Hmmm…let’s see what we can do with this…you know how you have to learn to interpret singles ads, real estate ads, and used-car ads to get to the truth? I think this is the same.

The gospel according to Georges…

Full 360 management of the business unit

Micromanager extraordinaire who will not leave people alone for 5 minutes to do their jobs.

Managed all aspects of P&L, business and product strategy and day-to-day operations

Micromanager extraordinaire WITH the ability to avoid spending money on needless shit like pens, paper and two-ply toilet paper.

Developed a new vision to drive growth via a content platform for users seeking to get more into food

Have NO idea what the fuck I’m doing, so I pulled this sentence out of my ass. My idea of getting into food involves a paper bag with a yellow M on it.

Aligned Product/Engineering/Community/Editorial to the new strategy and increased traffic by more than 20% YoY

Actually just fired most of the staff so the same overworked people have to do it all. Bought an entire workshop of underpaid people in a third-world country to generate traffic.

Streamlined the Editorial process to increase content production 5x while maintaining cost under control and achieving profitability on the editorial content

Started whoring out the screen space to whoever wants to buy it, and letting advertisers write content. Bath soap? Smells like fruit. Fruit is food. We’re good.

Merged the Chow and Chowhound brands into a single unified property from both a user and technology stand point

My micromanaging and cost control won’t allow me to have two websites.

Restructured the team and made key hires to execute on this vision

Shitcanned anybody who knew anything and hired bootlickers to do my dirty work.

How’s that?

(sorry about the funky formatting and scrolling…don’t know how to fix it…)
