Elite Restaurant ( Post Renovation Dim Sum Impressions)

Ive always been a fan of breakfast for dinner. But I’ve never personally had dim sum in the evening. Would love to give it a try sometime though!

dimsum at night is as delicious as dimsum in the day!

my understanding is that dim sum specialists typically do not cross over to prepare non dim sum dishes, and i consider it unlikely that elite would carry double staffs in the evening.

I know it’s not traditional but nom wah tea parlor in ny does dim sum all day.

Would love to have some drinks or beers with my dim sum!

I love the idea of dim sum all day and night. My concern is that kitchens would kill their evening menu and go all in with dim sum. I don’t want to lose the traditional Cantonese dinner menu. I don’t know if the economics but compare and contrast how packed Seafood Harbor is during the day versus the evening. Would it make sense for SH to just offer dim sum?

The funny thing here is that traditionally, Cantonese restaurants offer dim sum in the mornings primarily as a marketing device to entice customers to come in for a full dinner experience (when they can charge more for the bigger format supper dishes, which often require a higher level of expertise from the chef). And if the first-time customer finds that the dim sum is good at a certain eatery, then the supposition is that s/he will come back for a full nighttime meal or banquet (which is usually far more profitable for the restaurant) based on that trust that the Chef can execute well.

I suspect that many accomplished Cantonese-style Chefs may be insulted with the prospect of never getting to “flex” their kitchen muscle, instead being relegated to steaming char siu bao all day, all night.

Sea Harbour has a great dinner menu unfortunately it does not get the attention it should

I’ve had some great HK / Canto seafood from dim sum places’ evening menus.

Yup. Dim sum and dinner service have completely different kitchen crew. The dim sum-making staff will typically begin work early in the AM to start making dim sum for the day. Their shift is done after lunch. Typically, dim sum service isn’t overseen by the head dinner chef either since they have their own “executive chef”.

Because live shrimp is $32 a pound and the rent is too damn high.

Sea Harbour always offered a small amount of dim sum items for dinner. I ordered some baked charsiu bao for dinner one time and they were fantastic, better than any I have had during regular dim sum hours.

Exactly. Thus dim sum.

If you want the dinner dim sum experience, Lunasia is probably the best place to go. They say they are open for dine-in now and are open for dinner assuming the hours on the website are correct. As other’s have said it’s pretty non-traditional to do so, but why let tradition stop you from enjoying dim sum whenever you want?
