Exploring the Cuisine South of the Yangtze River - Jiang Nan Spring [Thoughts + Pics]

Celebrated Mother’s Day dinner here last night. We are huge fans of Chang’s Garden so were looking forward to the meal. We kept it pretty light as most of us were stuffed from brunch, but just wanted to mention the standout dish of Dong Po Pork, or red braised pork belly. The sauce was a delicious balance of sweet, salty and savory and the table couldn’t stop eating it with rice. One of the reasons we tend not to get this dish is because it is usually way to fatty, but our piece yesterday was meaty with fat layers just thick enough to add the richness you love in this dish without making you feel sick afterwards. Unless you’re my 14yo son, who loves gua bao and realized you could order buns here for $0.45 each, and wolf down 8 buns stuffed with the pork.

Rest of the meal was good (spicy intestines with duck blood, lotus leaf spare ribs, tea smoked duck) but just weren’t as life changing as the pork belly!
