Filipino restaurants -- Carson

A coworker took a trip to the Ikea Carson and noted that there a ton of Filipino restaurants in the area (and apparently a large Filipino community there?). She said she saw “lechon” signs everywhere and, bc she’s not a lechon fan, she didn’t know which place to try.

I did a search (only cursory) and couldn’t find anything about Filipino restaurants in the Carson area. Anyone have any info?

Yes! Carson has a lot of Filipino restaurants and Filipino oriented businesses. A lot of the places are very casual and the turo-turo kind. Pre-Covid, I’d head down there for a fix if I didn’t feel like making the drive from Westside across town to Eagle Rock, Glendale, West Covina areas. Sadly I’ve never been blown away by the lechon I’ve tried in Carson places. Good, but not great. Probably better for my waistline. I love lechon enough that for a recent birthday I had a whole one as the centerpiece for the party.

For a nicer sit down with cleaner presentation, Silog is a good place. Their sisig is really good. The site has good photos and descriptions of dishes.

For more takeout or casual dine in with basic amenities and no restrooms, I like Fiesta (mentioned in article posted by @sgee ) and Baboys at Bahay Kainan. I haven’t been to Fiesta since they changed over from Tony’s but I understand they’ve kept everything the same. It’s a grilled bbq style place, the pork belly, pork and chicken skewers are some of my faves. Their atchara, a pickled papaya condiment is good. The combo plates come with choice of meat, rice and some atchara. Highly recommend their bibingka. The regular one is always available, but the specialty ones, they make fresh and takes 20-25 minutes. I like that the bibingka comes in a small portion and I’ve gotten a dozen to bring to the office or even to just freeze at home.

In the same plaza as Fiesta, I’d avoid DJ Bibinkahan and Aling’s for Filipino food. Poke Etc, next to Aling’s is pretty good.

Baboys does more of a fusion take with making hamburgers and burritos with filipino ingredients. Their special item is the lumpia burger as an example of the fusion. I loved Belly n Snout when they were in Ktown and Baboy’s sort of satisfies the itch without having to drive out to Ontario where BnS is these days.

I bring up the restroom issue because a lot of filipino food can be messy or need to use hands.

Manila’s Lechon Manok is one of the places we like for a turo-turo joint. But they can be a bit inconsistent, since they offer so many dishes. Better to go earlier in day when they’re busy with a lot of turn. It’s easy enough to order a small amount of lechon to try and see if you like it. They also sell the various fried stuff like chicharon, fried chicken skins, etc. Which is one of the reasons I like going there but my cholesterol hates me :rofl:
