How Asian Is Your Costco?

Really shows what a ridiculous amount we pay here for inferior products. The lens industry is such a scam for consumers.

Youā€™re not the only one. I donā€™t get it. I also donā€™t get Trader Joes.

I totally donā€™t get TJ - mediocre shop with mainly low quality (produce, cheese etc) or highly processed food

You must not have children. Costco makes a ton of sense for anyone providing for more than their spouse.

TJs is good for a few things including snacks, quick meals for small families and surprisingly, orchids.

But the price is pretty fair for the quality for many of the items (IMHO).

The few times we tried stuff from them the quality was so disappointing that the prices werenā€™t great

I donā€™t buy the sad produce at Trader Joeā€™s or highly procesed food anywhere. A lot of their products suck (their tortilla chips are remarkably bad) but they have good prices on some high-quality items including crackers, Belgian chocolate, nuts, peanut butter, roasted peppers, toum, frozen pizza made in Italy, Greek olive oil, some cheeses, house-brand ā€œPain Pascalā€ levain from La Boulangerie (some parts of the SF Bay Area only), bar soap, deodorant, and toothpaste.

Trader Joeā€™s has been through many changes. It began IIRC in something called Pronto Markets which the founder envisioned as a meld between a liquor store and a health food store. Signs of this remain to this day. Now the liquor element is more focused on budget wines.

Trader Joeā€™s has great prices on some first-rate hard liquor, especially around Christmas when its selection expands. Wines ā€¦ generally whatā€™s good isnā€™t cheap and whatā€™s cheap isnā€™t good, but there are some good values, e.g. Vinho Verde and Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.

Yeah. It depends on the item of course. I donā€™t buy all my produce there (especially since I have access to a Super King recently), but generally find that they have the best prices and quality for items likeā€¦

ā€“ Workhorse Tomatoes (Compari and Mini San Marzanos)
ā€“ Crimini Mushrooms (sometimes Shiitake)
ā€“ Shallots (Some places donā€™t even carry them UGH!)
ā€“ Bagged Baby Kale
ā€“ Steamed Lentils
ā€“ Pomegranate Seeds
ā€“ Teeny Tiny Avocados

They also have some unique seasonal items, like the Baby Corn and Cole Slaw Mix (the best one in the market).

TJā€™s was the only reliable place I was able to find fiddlehead ferns (many years ago). Canā€™t find them any longer :frowning:

Fiddleheads have a short season and are imported from the East Coast. Interesting that Trader Joeā€™s would carry them, thatā€™s really not the kind of thing Iā€™d expect from them.
