Heading out to south OC. I’d like to stop in Irvine for Chinese take out lunch. Any recs?? Can’t do sichuan.
Sam Woo - 15333 Culver Dr., East of Irvine Center Drive.
This is a favorite of my wife’s when we just need to grab something quick and substantial. Good value, good quality. By the Walnut Ave. 99 Ranch Market.
Second Yu’s garden if you love Chinese/Taiwanese style cold plates.
Lol basically like Lu’s Garden in San Gabriel.
But much more affordable! And they have a lunch special like 3 dishes for 11 bucks which is awesome.
My favorite in the area for Chinese is actually Min Chef in Tustin, which is fairly close to Irvine if you can swing it (adjacent to the 5 freeway if you’re taking that route). I think they are from a restaurant chain in Beijing and also specialize in Beijing cuisine. Home style but a bit more refined. They have separate lunch and dinner hours.
In Irvine itself, I might consider:
-
Hometown Restaurant - a hole in the wall Chinese restaurant with some Shanghai-nese options on the menu; open all day
-
Kingchops - Taiwanese pork chop specialist. I’ve heard that their Rowland Heights location is better but I think it’s still pretty good, though a significant amount of food for their pork chop rice. Lunch and dinner hours.
-
Jing’s Kitchen - a hole-in-the-wall pure takeout operation in an office complex. Specialize in Shanghai-nese food. Apparently they now have a website (saw a link on Yelp) where you can order for pick up. Order ahead if possible since they don’t really have any waiting area. Open all day but they do close early (like 6 PM) and are weekdays only.
Literally dozens of possibilities. Most efficient would be Yu’s Garden in the shopping center on Walnut near Jeffrey. It’s a Taiwanese restaurant with a to-go table of 20 to 30 items, so you can get in and out in minutes.
If you can survive the parking lot of death. I haven’t been since the pandemic but I hate that parking lot.
Yup this is the place we did. Very quick and easy. Thank you all. Fun to see all the options around OC
Funny. I go to 99 Ranch Market maybe once every 2 months and never have a problem. Well…. If you don’t count that one time.
Park near the gas station and walk in!
Tried that before but maybe it’s not as bad now. We used to go to Chef Chen and 101 Noodle quite often.
