Best New Restaurant
Angry Egret Dinette
Seriously???
It isn’t even a restaurant, as far as I can tell.

They sell food and there’s seating on the patio. The Beard awards made a deliberate effort to broaden their selection.
I have been looking for a place to unload my utter disappointment in Angry Egret. Maybe this is the place? I believe people when they say that they love Wes’s cooking, but I have never had anything from any of his places (dating back to the truck) to make me say “damn!”.
I tried Angry Egret once. It was “fine.” I have not been interested in returning.
I did have some “damns” at the truck. But not after that. The bricks and mortar GT was ok - nothing transcendent. And AE really sucks.
+1
Liked the GT truck, have tried quite hard but can’t find much to like at AE.
I really enjoyed the tacokase when Sergio was still in the kitchen
I tried it once at GT with @J_L
Was fine but wasn’t wowed by anything.
I think a self-curated takocase at Holbox could be more satisfying.
I’ve never been, but I find what’s even weirder is Banh Oui, a fast casual sandwich shop. Beard is expanding beyond Euro-centric French/Italian, but these choices are just odd.
Is this pandemic availability related?
It’s not about the pandemic.

Congrats to all the winners
finalists, not winners yet.
As Tom Colicchio joked on Top Chef, “when someone tells you they were a finalist, it means they didn’t win.”
Best Chef: California
Asian American chefs coming in strong.
In part because the organization’s atoning for past sins.
