Javier Cabral (of Munchies): "This Is Why LA’s Mexican Food Is Still Not the Best In the US"

Homestate makes legit to-order flour tortillas? I really need to wakeup and get over there…lol

On a side note: Why does everywhere in Silver Lake that is awesome seem to only have hours of 8 AM - 3 PM? I didn’t realize Silver Lake was one massive retirement home…

Maybe Javier should stick to sopes.

BTW I might be lambasted for this but I’ll take Santa Ana over any part of LA for Mexican food.

Hell of a claim, but Santa Ana might just be less explored, where is your list of spots in Santa Ana for people to judge?

I’ve been thinking about this tortilla thing for a month or so after noticing freshly made corn tortillas on a couple of TV shows. They looked nothing at all like the ones I see in my local markets. I assume it’s mass production and preservatives, but the ones I saw in TV looked almost like pressed corn bread in comparison. I’d love to be able to buy them like that. I don’t even think they’re close in the restaurants here in OC.

And when you consider Costa Mesa has Taco Maria… gasp, is the OC the best Mexican dining in the country?

I proposed the same thing a while back on the other board and had to pull up population density and stuff to back it up when I was lambasted.

Lived in Santa Ana 20 years and LA 10 years, would highly disagree.

The best mexican restaurant in Santa Ana is the banh mi che cali on harbor.

As a random, boldfaced claim it just seems like something said to be controversial.

If people present evidence to the contrary in terms of restaurants that beat out LA equivalents, I am sure people would happily listen.

I guess by default Costa Mesa has the best Mexican food in the country right???

Yeah but you also think Trieu Chau is no different than LA counterparts and NYC pizza isn’t all that so… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I’m pretty sure no one here has even been to 5% of the Mexican places in both LA or OC to make any sort of definitive call. Any specialist you can find in either city is probably not significantly better than the other to warrant the drive.

I have yet to find goat birria in LA as good as El Cabrito.

Yep. They aren’t cheap, but very good. Call ahead to make sure they save you some.

Don’t even need to go there, can’t find a decent $1 taco stand within 1.5 miles of my parents house located in santa ana proper. Never, ever had that problem in a heavily hispanic neighborhood in LA. Does Santa Ana even have a street food scene? Cuz the only one I’ve ever seen is the $1 taco truck located by the propane shop on Bolsa. And that truck is terribad. And Tacos Mexico is a grossly inferior version of King Taco that actually does have metallic tasting tortillas.

Finally…
Trieu Chau is no different than Kim Ky and tell me more about how there are 4, super high level NYC pizzerias located just a $40 cab ride away while the rest are completely average.

Sorry dude, had better pizza at random hole in the walls in Jersey.

I don’t judge Mexican cuisine by $1 tacos. Because honestly how good is that $1 taco stand anyways.

For me it’s about the specialty dishes and how good they are flavor wise.

You went to like 4 pizza places in NYC for a weekend and then claim that everything is mediocre except for 4 places? C’mon man…

Sorry, you’ll pardon me for listening to NY’ers over the decades wax poetic about their pizzas and the magic of the water.

Come to find out if your name is not Di Fara or Patsy’s or Lombardi’s your pizza is shit.

It’s like someone coming here and eating at Sasabune and 3 random sushi places off sunset and proclaiming LA sushi mediocre because LA peeps always bragging about how their sushi is so good.

Yup. So we can agree that most NY pizza is shit and most LA sushi is shit and move on now.

By that logic most of the Italian food in Rome sucks because the touristy spots selling mediocre food far outnumbers the legit spots.

The whole point of doing your research in advance and checking out boards like this is to find good ones in a sea of mediocrity. That is true for any city in the world.

When do they run out usually?

Roofing tile, yes; metallic, I don’t think so.

They package them up. So it’s not part of the restaurant supply.
