With the LA Weekly gutted, and Gold gone, what will become of food criticism in Los Angeles?

This is beyond a tragedy. This man is responsible for my, and I am sure many others, obsession with good food.

He was such an immense figure that it is not only horrifically saddening in a personal way, but a holistic way that makes one wonder about the future of dining in our city. Who else illuminated the crevices of LA dining like Gold? No one.

I am pleased I saw him one last time on one of his trips to Bavel while I was there; alas, I would have bought him a bottle of Lebanese wine had I known we would lose him so soon. I imagined he would be around another few decades for some reason!

There are some good food writers at Eater. And when he appears, our own Tony C.

It’s amazing that somebody I’ve never met could have such a profound impact on my life. Very sad.

I felt the same about Bourdain. And other non-food related people. Sad indeed.
