Republique isn’t very likable whatsoever LOL. Very snobby.
I loved the takeout I got during COVID from Kali other than the panna cotta. Not great to hear nothing was “exceptional” other than the wine list. Still looks like a very interesting meal.

Warrior: I have higher expectations for expensive restaurants than I do for everyday restaurants, and the enthusiasm level in my reviews reflects that. When I write a gushing review about an expensive restaurant (e.g., Hayato), I consider that restaurant truly elite.
Warrior: I said “top 20” last time, but our recent visit established this as a clear top 10 LA restaurant in my mind and top 5 non-Japanese. Love the wine list too.
Warrior: I continued my diet at Kali. wowee zowee. 7.0 Warrior Points.
Peony: I feel Kali has been improving quite a lot over the years. Every time I visit I feel the meal was much better than the one before. The meal tonight was my favorite of all the visits. The mushroom / seaweed risotto topped with truffle was really remarkable.
We’ve been to Kali twice since our last visit, and I don’t think it has changed significantly. Same solid restaurant.
Koast reminds me of a Kali’s old lunch menu for those who remember, but a little more seafood focused.
Have heard some scuttlebutt that the Kali remodel being teased on their IG is actually a whole new concept, and the tasting menu/fine dining format is done. Such a bummer, always felt like it was just one of those restaurants for people who are just all about the food. Always dependable and delicious, but even with the Michelin Star seemed to always be under the public radar.
We were the biggest Kali proponents on here, but we didn’t feel it was quite one-star level. It was a nice meal at the Republique level for me. The staff were good and stuck with the restaurant for a long time, which is always nice to see. I will definitely miss their barley risotto.
