Have had all of the above recs except for Bob’s and absolutely my fave is B’s, as JeetKuneBao noted. While hers may not be the most traditional it’s just too scrummy, much more than any of the other aforementioned imho. Bouchon’s in LA when they first opened was good too. I may be wrong but I don’t think Proof makes them… been going for years ever since they first opened and were oft empty. Their morning buns are fire though.
same here.
Hi there! Long time creep, first time respondent here!
Wayfarer Bread & Pastry in SD has the best Kouign-Amann I’ve ever had! Between the precise layers and expertly-timed caramelization, Wayfarer puts others to shame. If you have to make a drive, definitely head south!

Welcome!
Can confirm the KA at Wayfarer along with pretty much everything else there is top notch.
That looks absolutely excellent!
Howdy doody!
Nice NY Times article today about Gusto Bread. Great read about the Nixtamal Queen.
A modern panadería in Long Beach, Calif., is challenging the idea of Eurocentric authority in the fine pastry realm.
Looks like I’m going to be close to Wayfarer on Sunday morning so am planning to swing by. Other than the KA what else do you recommend? Almond, ham and cheese or plan croissant? Cinnamon bun any good?
The coffee at Bird Rock a few blocks away is better.
I would focus my efforts on the baguette, KA, cinnamon roll and croissants. Pick the croissants based on your personal preference. We loved the ham and cheese, butter and almond. They also have very good scones according to my wife but I’m not a scone person. If you are not adverse to being an animal I would pick up some deli ham and cheese to eat on the baguette in a parking lot or in your car. Delicious.
You can also order online for next day pick up but I don’t think you’ll be able to order any of the daily specials.
new hot find, the almond kouign amann from Le French Rooster (Burbank). Possibly the best kouign amann I’ve had in years. I vastly prefer this to Republique’s regular kouign amann

Aside from above scones for sure!
Great, thank you both!
I drive by every weekend on the way to Artelice Patisserie. I’ll have to pop in to give these a try.
I still prefer Lou’s but Lou’s doesn’t have these insane AKA’s. Need to do an almond croissant / almond kouign amann bang bang.
When I dropped in to Roosters before the world shut down, I was told they didn’t make their own croissants. The were from a “supplier.”
So I think I just got the chouquettes and called it a day.
Lou is amazing and I miss his tuna sandwich for lunch.
Rooster wants an absurd $19.50 for a full sandwich in comparison.
I’m a big fan of Lou’s egg/chicken sandwich.
Holy hell.
Is he baking the bread, farming the vegetables and raising his proteins in an organic bubble?
That looks so yummy!
I really like this place. It’s the closest I’ve been able to find to Panaderia Rosetta in CDMX (which is superior, but still, take what I can get!)
