Leopardo - Hancock Park

i have no idea who it’s for. which is too bad because it seems well-funded, actually reviews restaurants, and also reviews a fairly diverse cross-section of restaurants. LA could use more competitors in food media, if at least to keep some of the older outlets honest

For sure infatuation is pretty terrible

I’ve thought about writing a general purpose app that compares a user’s personal reviews of something to reviews of another person or another entity to determine how well they match and to recommend new restaurants (or music, wine, hotels, books, movies, etc.) based on strong matches. it could be based on numerical ratings and/or AI language analysis. i’m too lazy though. and my strongest matches after Michelin would be people on here who are antagonists.

I personally don’t like Infatuation a lot but at the same time I think they are relatively close to “normal” people going out, eating in restaurants and having an opinion on the experiences. I think it is important not to forget that people who participate on food discussion boards like this one and similar ones in some ways live in a bubble and don’t understand what most people think about food and its importance in everybody’s life. Most people who go out have much, much less experience (and interest) on the depth of restaurants dishes and look for relatively simple dishes which don’t push boundaries for them. From the discussion on this board alone it is quite obvious that Leopardo isn’t an easy restaurant and so the Infatuation rating is pretty much expected even compared to much less favorable restaurants from this board

they too often tell people to go spend their money at bad restaurants. no matter what their point of view might be, it’s a disservice. and a waste of what appears to be a fair bit of funding for a food media outlet

No dog in the fight either way but that chicken in the review looks atrocious.

i went the other night, in protest of that infartuation review. there are posts on here from me awhile back complaining about the restaurant’s lack of focus (among other things). i’ll say it – the food was better when the restaurant was unfocused.

Yeah i miss some of those early menus. Cocktails and bites at the bar is the move imo.

Just a huge space overall tho, half the seating is probably the sweet spot for that original casual

They were talking about splitting the place in two but never followed through?

They had an ugly wall and took it down.

i remember skenes saying something like he wanted leopardo to be just pizza but the space was so big they had to do more. i also thought he said he didn’t want his name attached at first, kinda like robin williams in aladdin, just be in the background. figure he’ll step back/move on at some point, if he hasn’t already started

He’s talked about two more restaurants he wants to open, a burger place and a fried chicken place.

for what it’s worth, when i was there this week, he was sitting at that table to your immediate right when you walk in, with a laptop open and a ton of (what looked like) architectural prints / drawings. it looked like he had already been there for awhile when i walked in, and it didn’t look like he was leaving anytime soon when i left. if he’s stepping away from leopardo, then he’s still using it as his office.
