I liked their pies.
My first job was working at the now defunct Marie Callender’s near LAX. I made my way through most (all?!) of their pie menu and had my first revelatory taste of rhubarb pie. I also learned that raisin pie and mince meat pie were delicious, dismantling my preconceptions of what I wanted to fill my pies. I went to a couple Marie Callender’s in the Sacramento area this last year and they seemed to be pretty sleepy; a good amount of customers taking pies to go but not too many dining in. Their cornbread tasted just as I remembered (sugary sweet with a delicate crumb). Not all that surprised by the news, but a bummer.
I did too. The Double Cream Boysenberry was one of my favorite pies. We knew there was trouble when they closed down the popular one by LACMA.
i have 8-9 pie pans i’ll never redeem…
