Pijja Palace - Silverlake

Use the Resy “Notify” link and put in the time you want.
You will probably hear on the day you requested or the day before that something is available.
I set about 3 Notifys on different days last week (and then forgot that I had outstanding dates, after I got the first one) and they all came through on the day requested. No idea why they prefer to work it that way but it worked out for me.

Ended up here tonight bc Lasita was fully booked and had no space for walk-ins? Good for them!

Saw a 9 pm for pijja and snagged it. Got onion rings, yellow wings, that famous pasta, plus a lamb and shells.

Long story short the first two were meh but the pasta was really tasty. Wish it were easier to get into

Enjoyable meal good but not great.

Thought the malai pasta was tasty but slightly watery.

The green chile chutney flavors were good but the crust was not great there was still bench flour on the bottom.

Good for a casual stop and a drink but def not a destination spot.

The early hype that can accumulate around a restaurant is not always a blessing. Often creates unrealistic expectations for the place.

yikes to that crust.

Yeah I only went because quarter sheets and Donnas were lines out the door. Apparently angelenos hate rain except when it comes to standing in the rain for hypebeast restaurants lol. They could be giving away 50 dollar bills and I wouldn’t wait in that type of weather.

Glad I tried pijja tho.

I found the sports bar motif confounding, as I don’t generally watch sports in places that require making a reservation weeks in advance. Conversely, I didn’t get the sense that the people dining there were paying much attention to the sports. The vibe certainly didn’t add to the experience.

I actually enjoyed the food more than I’d expected given the hype. Living nearby, I imagine if they offered lunch or delivery I’d add it to my regular rotation. Especially given the dearth of good Indian options in the neighborhood.

I still love this restaurant and have been a bunch. I find it to be a really fun hang with a group of 4.

Last night…I learned they got rid of the tenders (which were killer). I hope they bring them back.

But, the 4 off menu pizzas they used to cycle through as specials are all permanent fixtures including the samosa pie. So that’s fun.

My partner and I did not enjoy Pijja Palace on our previous visit, but that was a while ago. We walked by the other night and saw that it wasn’t jammed for the first time in forever. Holidays are a good time for restaurants that are generally packed. Either way, the pizza is pretty bad. This post might have to be linked to the supermarket pizza thread because this tasted like Red Baron: a warm cracker with generally salty things on top. This samosa pijja included a few desultory peas to remind you of its origins. Potatoes had a nice texture but perhaps added to the general blandness. You see a lot of green chutney streaks on this pie but its flavor is incredibly muted - a tangy pop here would have made a huge difference. Not into it!

The pizza is terrible, I agree. It does tastes like microwave pizza, or the pizza I used to eat at the skating rink when I was 5 plus a little bit of spice to make it “Indian.”

Onion rings are an over-battered mess.

We’ve had two visits. One unmitigated success, and one complete disaster. LOVE the premise, but would’ve posted if I’d had two solid meals. The second meal was so ROUGH, I’m honestly not feeling charitable anymore.

I like the premise too. The basic ideas are good. Dosa battered onion rings make great sense. Indian sauces on pasta makes sense. I just think the dishes are executed poorly. The service was preposterous too.

I ordered two deliveries from there after our in-person visit because usually I trust Michelin.

I’ve had only great meals here, mostly just cause a group of us can have a fun time. Maybe 5+ visits? I love the cocktails, the tenders (RIP) and the pasta. It’s been a few months tho. The secret is to get the pizza and not think of it as pizza or else you’re doomed to compare it to …other pizzas rather than the weird things they are.

Agreed on the onion rings tho, love the flavor but sometimes that breading is THICK.
