In 1990, McDonald’s announced that it was going to cook its fries in 100% vegetable oil. The 2001 lawsuit resulted from the discovery that the “natural flavor” in their fries in the US included beef extract, but the company said that was not the case in India. Legally, “natural beef flavor” can be a vegetarian product produced in a lab.
