I haven’t done sushi in NYC yet. The big sushi temple chefs in NYC are all former apprentices of Saito and Jiro. While LA has the masters like Mori and Shunji. I am sure it’s great sushi and they deserve to be evaluated on their own.

I did the Nakazawa popup at the Peninsula. No Sergio in sight. I didn’t report back to FTC on it.

I can think of two (Nakazawa and 69 Leonard) that fit that description. Who else?
As for NYC vs. LA, my experience is that New York has more high end shops than LA and embarrassingly few affordable but good shops compared to LA.

i enjoyed nakazawa pre-nyt review, nakazawa dc was disappointing. not expecting much from the la location.

I had a good meal at the NY location years ago when it was the only one. I liked that Chef Nakazawa used a lot of locally sourced fish and didn’t import everything from Japan, with exceptions of course.
Still more excited about Sushi Noz opening in Century City.
