A review of our most esteemed Sushi Yoshizumi in the San Francisco Chronicle today by Soleil Ho.

The Chronicle doesn’t know where the South Bay is?

The overall tone of the review is great and I am happy for the positive coverage overall, but the descriptors and her understanding/interpretation is amateur at best, with a few tried and true Yelper vernacular thrown in (e.g. “the sushi at Yoshizumi is SO FRESH”… or comparing the madai themed tamagoyaki to a mochi muffin (and referencing memory foam mattress), or the edges of the Akagai to a well loved frisbee…

It’s sad that the only full-time, properly funded restaurant critic gig in the area is being wasted on somebody with so much to learn.

excellent lunch from akira-san at sushi yoshizumi.

saba bou zushi
best saba bou zushi I’ve had since lockdown. excellent balance between the saba, kombu and kanpyo(?).
pro tip: ask for some of akira-san’s perfectly crisp and crunchy nori. @JeetKuneBao, @J_L, @NYCtoLA, @Sgee, @butteredwaffles, @A5KOBE, @onelabneh

kaisen futomaki
uni, ikura, anago, ebi, tuna, salmon, kyuri, takuan, shiitake
delicious. one piece did come with a supplemental inedible object :grimacing:

sashimi
hotate, masu, chutoro, akami, botan ebi, aji, kinmedai, kamasu, uni

nigiri
chutoro, kohada, madai, kinmedai, aji, kamasu, hotate, anago, kanpyo, tamago

Welcome (back) to SF Bay Area!

Assuming your lunch was this past Sunday and you are still around, hopefully you will have time to return to try the ankimo appetizer, kaisen chirashi, maguro futomaki, anago don, and regular futomaki before going back home.

What were your favorites of what you sampled so far?

Holy cow that spread looks like absolute perfection. Saba is one of my favorite sushi fish and I need to try it pressed style.

That kohada is looking and sounding lovely right about now.

thanks @beefnoguy, I wanted to order the ankimo and kaisen chirashi but they were sold out and I noticed the ankimo already sold out for this week, that was fast.

my highlights were the nigiri, possibly the best I’ve had for takeout. the kinmedai with that beautiful skin, aji, kohada, chutoro, scallop, uni, and anago were my favorites. the saba bo-zushi with that crispy nori and the futomaki were also excellent. I basically really liked everything haha.

another excellent lunch. favorite bites were the toro, kinmedai, aji, buri, hotate, anago, sawara, and maguro futomaki.

my only quibble is that it could have been even better if the sushi could have been prepared a bit closer to my pick up time. everything was already packed and ready to go when I arrived about 10 minutes early so the rice was a bit cold.

also, i wish akira-san would provide some of his nikiri (maybe as a supplement) instead of packets of kikkoman. pro tip: BYOSS.
