It is still there on the menu. Was tempted to get it to-go.

Went to Qing Dao Bread Food afterwards to grab some frozen goodies.

Have y’all tried Mandarin Noodle Deli on Las Tunas?
My family seems to prefer that spot.
Both are mian dians?

New Mandarin Noodle Deli on Las Tunas is also a Shanxi-style place. At one point they also had the oat noodles. I’m not sure if they have them any longer.

they serve some shanxi style dishes mainly involving knife cut noodles, but i’d hesitate to classify them as a shanxi place, as their menu includes things like rice dishes, scallion pancakes, XLB & …IIRC kung pao shrimp which i wouldn’t categorize as being shanxi dishes in origin. the place kinda reminds me of the late liang’s kitchen/shang jie where new mgmt took over a ‘franchise’ type location and then started preparing specialties reflecting their region(s) of origin but the folks running NMD retained much of the pre-existing menu…

Unless there’s been a change, the owner of New Mandarin Deli is from Shanxi, and while the restaurant has plenty of Pan-Chinese items, like many others nowadays (I mean how many places have Sichuan items that aren’t truly Sichuan?), it does serve knife cut noodles, and used to have the oat noodles, which is a deep Shanxi dish you won’t find at most Shanxi restaurants in the SGV. I’m not familiar enough to know if he retained the earlier menu or not, but that might explain it.

i don’t doubt that the cook is from shanxi (i regret missing out on trying their oat noodles), but again, i would hesitate to classify a place as shanxi when a large percentage if not the majority of the menu items are not of shanxi origin. a lot of places claim to serve knife cut dao xiao mian which is exclusively a shanxi thing, and i would hesitate to classify any of those places as shanxi either the same way i’d never call yangs kitchen a burger joint even though they have burger nights there (tonight, in fact).

Alright I could use an education from you all as I didn’t know what I was doing today at Yi Mei.

I ordered youtiao and it unfortunately just tasted mostly of fryer oil. I know you’re supposed to consume with soy milk so I got some of that but is hot or cold the way to go? Also should the soy milk be seasoned in any way?

I also grabbed a savory rice roll which I enjoyed, but it definitely could have used a condiment like chile oil. Are they usually eaten sans condiments? What are they usually eaten with?


What else should I have gotten?

you can also do the vietnamese way and eat warm/hot with various soups/porridges. they work functionally like croutons.

not your fault. Their YT is terribly oily it’s kinda disgusting actually. When you bite into it you have actual oil drip down your mouth.

Soy milk you can choose salty or sweet (or nothing).

The Fan Tuan roll is served that way. Sometimes I add some of the garlic sauce but usually it’s an “on the go” item so you don’t really dip it on anything.

I gotta say - the old school spots/ Yi Mei and Huge tree are really slacking off. It’s pretty pitiful.

I wish Pine and Crane sold their YT separately cause those are really good and their soy milk is really good. Unfortunately everything else is kinda bleh

My grandmother used to own/run a taiwanese breakfast shop so seeing all these failures on basic stuff at places is so infuriating. It’s not like they aren’t busy. Yi Mei in san gabriel is PACKED so is Huge tree. Should be zero excuses.
