Canadian Travelling to LA - Recommendations and feedback?

“Mariscos Jalisco for shrimp tacos and ceviche, either the one in downtown or the one not far away in Boyle Heights.”

I have say, I’ve had tons of shrimp tacos, paid heaps - or not - and the one I keep dreaming of is the deep fried one at Mariscos Jalisco. I think we were in Boyle Heights, not far from the first location of Guisados. http://www.guisados.co

Different and better then just about any shrimp taco I’ve ever had.

The Posideon Tostada at Mariscos Jalisco is a must get imo

You need something to do while waiting. Because you will be waiting for a while.

Ah, gotcha. I chat with strangers…every single day

Pozole verde soup or huevos rancheros, maybe some of the salads with amazing California produce. I’m pretty sure they have smoked fish in Toronto. Just sayin.

Yeah, someone coming from Toronto might be as unimpressed by Gjusta’s smoked fish as I was. One of the least convivial places I’ve ever had the misfortune to patronize.

The sandwiches are on the smallish side but quite filling. I think the Italian sandwich is absolutely sublime.

Some may disagree, but, IMHO, the typical crowd at Gjusta does not, at least initially, invite spontaneous conversations w/ strangers. But I wish you the best in trying it.

The people watching, though, is priceless.

Sorry, I don’t engage with the common folk

I say yes to In-N-Out. Get a cheeseburger. You’ll be walking around a lot right???

And get a bacon wrapped hot dog with grilled onions and bell peppers, mustard/ketchup/mayo, and grilled jalapeño.

Re: Mexican. Go to Tire Shop Taqueria. Use Uber/Lyft from DTLA. Don’t wander around the area btw. Not exactly the safest place.

LOL. You mistake me for “common folk”? My partner says and I quote “she goes around the world picking up people.”

You know the jokes aren’t as funny when I have to explain them.

When I wait at Gjusta I am surrounded by plebs, therefore I must avoid interacting with them by burying my face in my phone. My driver can’t come quickly enough.

That won’t deter me from eating smoked fish at Gjusta. It would be a disservice to not order a fish plate, not only because of the wide assortment of fish, but consuming with their amazing bread and housemate accoutrements is what truly makes it amazing. Sure, a fish plate sounds plain, but eaten with house pickled onions and burrata over some of their wonderfully olive oil grilled pumpernickel is something that should not be missed.

Then again, perhaps there is a place in Toronto that is doing that with such precision and high quality ingredients.

And the people watching. It is a very “LA” experience, IMHO, and an experience that’s specific to that PART of LA.

True story I ran into Jeremy Piven at Gjelina in the men’s room. Abbot Kinney is a good mix of yuppie, hipster, and boho. Lots of pretty girls.

(Other celebrity sightings: Seen Model Emily Ratajowski at Grand Central Market and at some coffee shop in Arts District.
Saw Curtis Stone at Hollywood Farmers Market.
Wes Avila from Guerilla Tacos at Everson Royce Bar.)

One of the best bakers in the city, and it’s fairly close to H&H, is Republique. Best to stop in for breakfast or brunch. Marge Manzke was nominated for James Beard and it’s a worthy nod. If you don’t have solid Southeast Asian food in Toronto, Cassia is a good bet. For true rye, Copenhagen bakery has the dense Danish rye…a godsend for the Danes in L.A. or so they tell me. Yes, Langer’s has the best rye in the city for deli rye. It’s a quick walk from the Red Line. But Wexler’s will be close. Get the corn beef over the pastrami at Wexler’s. Get the pastrami #19 over corn beef at Langer’s or even better, get the #19 with beef tongue…awesome.

Langer’s #19 is a crime against humanity. What monster would repond to the perfection of their pastrami on rye with, “this needs some mediocre Swiss cheese and cole slaw”?

I’m with you. No need to mess with perfection. Just a little deli mustard.

I like the #19, it is one of my favorite sandwiches ever.
Even with the #19, the pastrami is still the star of the show. The slaw, cheese, and dressing brings other elements to play that works out pretty harmoniously but at the same provides a little contrast.

I always go to Langers with a friend so that way we can get a #19 and another sandwich that is more straight up, like just pastrami and a few squirts of deli mustard. Of course a Doc Brown or a phosphate to drink!

I’m either old or a non-LA’er or both cause I’ve never heard of any of those people
