January 2019 Weekend Rundown

Hi @JeetKuneBao,

Which branch did you end up trying? Definitely agree on the spicy wontons.

Chinese BBQ Pork, Little Fatty.

Everything was good tonight, especially the three cup chicken and pisco sours.

P.S., Do you ever set up the food shots so all the drinks don’t show? :joy::rofl::joy:

What did you think of this dish? I felt like it was missing something to make it great, but it was still a really good deal for the price point. Something about the sauce felt a little too overpowering to me, but the skin/fat situation was great.

The sauce was good last night, a well-balanced hoisin flavor. The steamed buns were too dense and maybe stale or maybe simply a bad batch, but the coleslaw and pork were great.

Little Fatty can be inconsistent sometimes. but most of the time I like the food. We go fairly often, so it’s easier to dismiss the occasional misstep of a neighborhood restaurant. It’s a great local place to have nearby.

Tustin location.

I like Mapo tofu, Kung Pao chicken, fish fragrant eggplant, and fish in spicy bean sauce, but most Sichuan food ain’t for me. That’s okay. For a lot of Chinese you like what you are raised on for me besides the basic bitch dishes I mentioned I can’t stand it. I gave it a shot. But it brought back memories of some hole in the wall place that my Mom’s coworkers recommend on Garfield in MP. Forgot the name. Even my Taipei born and raised Mom, thought it was disgusting. We don’t like to waste food but all the leftovers went straight to the trash. It is also not uncommon for lots of Canto’s to not like Sichuan. But hey Sichuan is having its moment right now (is it still?)…I rather have some homemade dumplings and noodles from the North tbh if we are speaking about food in the 626 in 2019. I’ll go to SF for my Cantonese
fix.

The hua jiao/Sichuan pepper just tastes disgusting to me. Just like Ethiopian injera bread, and Mexican herb papalo in a cemita.

Feng Maoed again again!

This dessert is just glorious (not that I had any). Rice stick, grilled, dipped in condensed milk. 1+1=3

Have you tried the pizzle?

Hard pass… uhhuhhhuhuh

The new pastrami sandwich on rye at Gwen, I believe it’s Australian Waygu pastrami $16.00.

This was good and different style of pastrami (compared to a Langers or Greenblatts). It was tasty, but wish I had gotten the meatball after the fact . Worth it to get for LA pastrami completists.

Margarita pizza at Cal Mare at the Beverly Center. Only went here because they were selling these pizzas for 53 cents yesterday since the Rams are going to the super bowl. It was actually pretty tasty. Interesting restaurant, but the menu is quite pricey (for a restaurant in a mall). Don’t think I’ll ever go back for a real dinner at their price point unfortunately… rather hit something in the mozza tier for the price.

that’s a crazy sounding weekend yo

Who in Ktown has the best Korean JJM?

Dinner at You Kitchen in Alhambra. Tried a few of the baos and dumplings – all very tasty. Loved the green onion pancake – best version I’ve had in some time. I liked how it was crispy on the edge and yet slightly doughy in the middle, and not too greasy. Bottom left: I forget the name but it was basically a plate of fried strips of dough, lightly sweetened. What’s not to love?

Yu Ga Ne (7th & Irolo), followed by Young King (Olympic & Harvard).

Although I don’t think anyone in ktown does it exceptionally well the places I enjoy the most are

Hong Kong banjum on 6th (Korean chain)

And Pao jao dumpling in the food court at ktown plaza on western

They both have the seafood stir fried versions too that add a little bit of wok hei

Wow, those Fundamental LA pics look great. I usually avoid food in Westwood proper like the plague, but that looks worth a visit…

Chef Min Kim (previously the CDC at Spring DTLA) is now helming Fundamental LA Westwood. He brings a great Korean sensibility to the menu. I enjoyed my recent meals there immensely. It’s like Papille: Focus is on deft execution.

How I want that Yuzu Shio Ramen!!!
