Spicy BBQ - Thai Town

My feeling too, also ordered it from Pailin.

Thanks for the feedback. Pailin it is!!

Spicy does one up Pailin in that Pailin does not do Gaeng Hang Lay but the general consensus I think is Pailin does a better Khao Soi.

Anyone prefer the jackfruit salad at Spicy vs Pailin?
How about the nam prik noom/ong?

Khao Soi: I prefer Pailin’s

Jackfruit salad: I prefer Spicy BBQ’s

Nam Prik Noom: I prefer Pailin.

Nam Prik Ong: I don’t like this dish generally, but of the two I prefer Spicy BBQ.

I think the jackfruit salad is slightly better at Spicy, mainly as Nemroz indicated because it is porkier. I think they put pig ear in it? Whatever it is it adds a depth of both flavor and texture that I miss at Pailin, but I still think the Pailin oneis very very good so you can’t really go wrong.

Nam phrik noom: Pailin by a mile. It has a distinct smokiness, is studded with garlic chunks and the fresh flavor of the chile shines through. The Spicy BBQ one for me is more homogenized in texture and flavor and it just doesn’t taste as fresh to me.

Can’t comment on the nam phrik ong because I only had it at Pailin.

Had it at Pailin as well. Was good. If I’m honest we know order kao soi when we bring guests there

I prefer kao soi and jackfruit salad at Spicy bbq myself. Have had many trials. Interesting you picked the 3 things we’ve discussed.

I went to Spicy BBQ originally thanks to Jonathan Gold’s rave about the nam prik oom, and as I said above it was very good, but I was expecting something more exciting and a lot spicier. Curious to try Pailin’s.

Despite being a chili dip I’ve never found nam phrik noom to be that hot and I don’t think it’s supposed to be. Spicy BBQ claims they use serranos but I have a hard time believing that.
Report back when you try Pailin’s. I like getting the larb todd and dipping it in the nam phrik noom.

really love the nam prik noom. Need to try Pailin’s still. hanglay, larb were great too.

Another successful visit
star anise heavy . Really nice

What dish is that? Doesn’t look like one I’ve had before…

It’s a northern pork salad, akin to larb, maybe it is a larb (i’m not thai enough). But it’s really fun, there are 3 different kinds of pork cuts so it’s extra porky with a multitude of textures. It’s spicy but the big surprise is how star anise heavy it is. Really fun to add more chili to.

Took a vegetarian family and 3 bottles of wine there today. Awesome place.

Sour spicy shrimp is so fun . Got the patties and jackfruit salad again

This thing comes fully loaded with their eggs and greens omelet patties. They tried to explain to me what it is but…

Oh yeah Spicy BBQ probably does one of the best Gaeng Som with Cha Om Omelette in Thai Town!
Not the owner but I believe one of the Aunties there is from Central Thailand hence the dish at this Northern specialist. Like stir fry krawpow, Gaeng Som ranks very high as a favorite amongst many Thai’s.

I highly highly rec this dish!

Holy kap kun krap! Was it always this spicy? After 4 months of no thai food this was a mind blowing time. We are both quite buzzed from this. I do not remember the sour curry being this hot but it’s glorious.

A very meaty jackfruit salad too

Gaeng Som at Spicy BBQ!

You know this is a very popular dish for Thai’s (maybe not as popular as Krapow), but very few places offer it.

I highly recommend the Gaeng Som!

If we’re speaking of spicy curries I like it better than Luv2Eats Crab/Fish Curry, much more complex

Yea it’s great. We’ve had it a few times. They’re going a bit too cheap on the shrimps, I think we counted 7 but awesome dish. Miss that spice. Girl was like whoa, ready to party
