Got a chance to tour and taste andy’s orchard in morgan hill during the peak of stone fruit season and had a great time. The tasting consisted of over 60 varieties of plums, peaches, nectarines, pluots and just happened to be during the short greengage plum season, a fruit dubbed the holy grail of stone fruit and “the best fruit in the world” by david karp. The greengage will be at this wednesday’s smfm while they last.
After the tasting you’re given buckets and tour guides lead you out into the orchards for an all-you-can-pick and sample session. Everything that you pick can be purchased at a discounted price. Biting into a just-picked tree-ripened peach is like a soup dumpling filled with liquid peach exploding in your mouth; it’s as good as it gets.
Highlights were the greengage, bling cling, bubble gum plum (this blew my mind, it literally tasted like bubble gum), and honey royale (tasted just like a mango).
Can we start making peaches on a plate a thing? #peachesonaplate
Tours are all done for this year, but if you’re in the bay area next year during stone fruit season it’s a fun way to spend a morning.
Great post – I’d love to do their tasting sometime. IMO Andy’s has the best picked-ripe fruit in the (extended) Bay Area, bar none. Even their donut peaches (usually a mediocre variety) are exceptional. It was nice to see all the photos. I’m a big fan of Angelus peaches, and bought a flat last time I was there (a few years ago).
this was my first time having flavor kings so i can’t really compare to other farms, all i can say is it was very good. the greengages and bubble gum plums stood out to me more because of how unique they were.
i just had some more greengages for lunch today and they are excellent. they had a jelly-like flesh that was less juicy but more syrupy and tasted kind of like honey and sweet pineapple and kiwi but with none of the tartness. if you can make it to the wed smfm give them a try.
On one of the last KCRW good food podcast market reports somebody from Andy’s Orchard was talking about the green gages. Made my mouth water listening to the description.
