Best in Thai Town / Little Armenia

Hanglay from Spicy BBQ is worth living for.

Bonus, spicy seafood in coconut sauce with awesome white mushroom.

Any new thai places in the last couple years folks are aware of that are worth trying? It seems like the Thai food boom has slowed in LA, haven’t really heard of anything new recently, but you never know when there’s a great new place only in the Thai papers for a while…

Because you’ve had the ones we have?

I don’t see how that’s at all implicit in my question. I can heroically manage to be interested in new things while still continuing to try things that exist (unless, of course, nobody tried Bestia until they had tried every single Italian restaurant in Los Angeles).

Kudos then. Sorry. I enjoy crusading against people’s need for new shiny things and trends. That doesn’t sound like you.

Back at our first thai town love in Covid outdoor styles

Not as spicy and aromatic as i remember it . Medium wasn’t cutting it so I loaded up more. Still a tremendous bowl of noodle

Crab rolls are super fun

Seafood and pork Yum Woon Sens light and refreshing with a big kick

Bang bang at Bhan Kanom before hitting Silom market
We always get ruammit, pangchi, pandan custard and ice creams

Some Thai tea or coffee with the crushed ice and a bowl of jade noodles is a perfect summer meal.

So thru DM’s I got a little more info…

The plan was to make it a Khao Gaeng (Rice and Curry)
(In Southern Thailand these rice and curry stands are prominent a plate of rice and choose between 1-3 different curries and dishes)

But with the current Pandemic they feel it’s not safe for a Khao Gaeng concept.

It will be fast and authentic but will not be a typical Pad Thai/Pad See Ew.

Was it gonna be like Ganda? I still miss that place (though Ganda was more central Thai if I’m remembering correctly).

Reminiscent of meat and threes in the South.

There is a new market that has popped up the past two weekends in the parking lot of Nuad Royal Thai Spa at 5300 Hollywood Blvd. Everything is limited to $5 or less, in fact that is the unofficial name of the market (ตลาดเสาร์ห้า). Everything we had on Saturday was way above average and downright delicious. Blew the vendors at Wat Thai of Los Angeles out of the water.

Damn lucky! Would love to see a report on the different vendors or what stall serves what.
That lot is also right across from Ruen Pair, Bhan Kanom Thai, and Pa Ord for even more Thai food.

There is also a night market at Silom Market correct?

When I visited in November it was a grilled skewer vendor that expanded to serve rad na and pad see ew. It has a night market feel, but was just them at that time. Have not been back since as outdoor dining was closed down soon after and only recently come back.

Thanks for the info! I wish it was open at night. Will definitely check this place out.

I got the pad see ew here the other night, and there is something about that wok cooked noodle that I haven’t had at any other Thai restaurant in the city.

First off, you get your noodles straight out of the wok, so they are blisteringly, tooth meltingly hot.
Secondly, there is a real wok hei, smoke flavor that I haven’t had in most other places.
Slightly under salted, but head and shoulders above any other pad see ew around.

edited to add: we got it with pork and it was amazing. nearly always when I order a dish from the “choose your protein” section of the menu I can be pretty confident that it will be pretty similar in taste and texture (shout out to the deep fried tofu at Ruen Pair, which is crispy on the outside and custard like on the inside), whether I get beef, chicken or pork it’s all overcooked, dry and chewy.
The pork at this pop up stand was perfectly cooked, flavorful, and still tender despite the insane heat coming from the wok. Delicious.

Are they open every day or just weekend evenings? It’s in front of Silom on Hollywood?

I can’t say when exactly they are there, but we got it last Wednesday, so it’s not just weekends. And yeah, they’re directly in front of Silom.

Awesome will have to check it out!

A fond memory of my younger days was getting pad thai with egg for 25 bhat on Khao San Rd, which was basically 35 cents since it was like 80 bhat to the dollar.

Any food porn of the Pad See Ew?

Tabula Rasa is opened FYI

My take is that there are many good, authentic Thai restaurants in Thai Town. It’s easier to go right than it is to go wrong. None is really doing anything elevated, like I would say Holy Basil is trying to do. It’s just about what suits your fancy.

I went through a phase when I dated several Thai girls. Isaan Station was very popular among them, even though they weren’t from NE Thailand / Laos.

Personally, I like the rice noodles with ground fish curry and duck larb at Lacha Somtum and the southern curry and fish kidney curry at Jitlada. But I would say these are just two of many good Thai restaurants in Thai Town.
