If the pandemic has done one positive thing for the LA food scene, it has been the rise of new pop ups (alot out of necessity from chefs out of work). What are some of your favorites right now or some that are still low key/not in the spotlight?
Danos Dumplings at Bar Bandini (former McCrady’s (Charleston) Chef de Cuisine Daniel Heinze) was a really fun one last month.
I thought it was cool to see Found Oyster resurrected after months of being dark over at Lolo last weekend.
Birria La Cruda is back up and running with a new truck. The chef brings his experience from work at Bestia to give a elevated twist / uses farmers market ingredients to his Birria and assorted dishes menu.
Anjahles brings fusion that she calls ‘LA inspired’ to her Jamaican food and Jazzy (the chef) is just an awesome person trying to make it happen!
You may already know this, but just so others are aware, Found Oyster has been doing take out (with a slightly different menu than their pre-covid in-house menu) and a seafood shop. There is some great stuff to be had, especially the smoked trout dip.
I have also enjoyed The Bad Jew’s porkstrami-based sandwiches, which have popped up at various places but most regularly at The Nosh. https://thebadjewla.com/
Keep it going Los Angeles. You are and always have been the trendsetter. Keep it up . Fight the whatever the fuck you want to call it . Kudos to the chefs and everyone. Bravo . We will survive.
I tried the passionfruit-lime icebox pie, fruit side pie, and genmaicha + grilled strawberry ice cream from Chainsaw last night (https://chainsawla.com/). All were great!
