Isla - Santa Monica

New spot from the Crudo e Nudo folks, sat at the chefs counter and got to chat with Houston whom I recognized back in the day from Momofuku Ko.

File this restaurant under the kind I want to see more of in LA. Everything was delicious, price point was spot on.

Highlights:
Chicken Heart Skewer (lots of peppercorn, delicious)
Whole Wood Fire Cauliflower (Way better than it had any right to be)
…somehow the garlic nori side of rice?
Duck Skewer (luxardo ish glaze/jus)
the cocktail I can’t remember the name of/all the wine.

Others (That were still really good!)
Calamari w/ marcona almonds/black garlic
tempura asparagus w yuzu kosho mayo
Warm olives in the oven
Zucchini Skewer w/ mint sauce + chili crisp
Prawn Skewer w Espelette

Also for dessert they had the tiniest little olive oil cake with yogurt frosting and strawberries and it was FOUR DOLLARS. A perfect little ending (we were very stuffed)

Wish we had more people so we could try more mains, the giant cod dish coming out of the wood fire oven looked bonkers. Seems like menu will change a lot, super seasonal stuff.

Anyone else pop in yet? I’m ready to go back with a group of 4+
