Luv2Eat for delivery last night after getting home from a trip and, as usual, everything was fantastic. Moo ping, kua kling, papaya salad + panang curry every time.
Han Yang always bangs hard. Best galbi tang, sullongtang, donkatsu, and kimchi. They also have seasoned thistle bibimbap. Does Jeon Ju at Olympic x Vermont have this bibimbap. I donât think so.
I am obsessed with the mustard green kimchi at Han Yang. Kimchi over rice makes me so happy. Bone broth and kimchi makes my gut happy.
OC has great Korean food.
Paid a visit to the director at Gol Tong. Wow. Also got a free dvd. Anyone been to the Korean-Chinese place next door?
Good to hear we were regulars there and I miss that place a lot
Thai food takeout after returning from a trip (especially Europe) is always a good scenario. For me, itâs Chao Krung, but Luv2Eat is always good, too.
Chefs Fern & Pla just got back from Thailand and everyone that works at the restaurant is so friendly!
Oh, totally (well, maybe not TOTALLY) random, but one of the âplaces to eat in Viennaâ lists that I was looking at included a Thai restaurant b/c the person creating the list said that youâre going to need a break from traditional German food. So I get what youâre saying.
I finally made it to Tacos a Cabron (the location near Citadel), and agree that the ribs were good! Not entirely sure how you are supposed to eat it as a taco with that bone in the middle, but it was still tasty charcoal-y goodness.
Unfortunately I didnât see any atole vendor nearbyâI may have just been there too early in the evening.
For reference I went around midnight.
You know about the stands and trucks on Whittier? Just east of Atlantic in front of theTarget.
Churros Don Abel.
Don Abel sells champurrado, atole, and cafe de olla to pair with its piping hot churros! Including the atole with those Maria cookies.
For reference I went around midnight.
Ahh, I was there closer to 7:30.

I do! I like to swing by there when Iâm in the area. The trucks that are there seem to turn over fairly frequently, but Churros Don Abel is a mainstay. Iâve had their churros (which I like a lot) and their champurrado, but I donât recall if i have seen atole there. Iâll have to pay them a visit sometime soon.
Iâve also been meaning to check out Comedor Tenchita for atole (and a bunch of other things).
Have you had Ponchoâs Tlyaudas?
I have not, but thatâs another that has been on the list for a while! It doesnât usually spring to mind for me, as Iâm not the biggest fan of tlayudas. Is it good? Do they have atole?
Naengmyeon at Yuchun (Koreatown)
Tacos at Sonoratown (Downtown)
Vongole with bottarga at Dal Milanese (Silver Lake)
For sure, itâs about needing a break / contrast. After two weeks in Paris with its croissants, raw oysters, steak frites, and tasting menus, nothing hits the spot like pad grapow, laab, and young coconut juice. After two weeks in Italy, I want Cantonese old fire soup and roast squabs and chrysanthemum tea. After two weeks in Japan, Iâm craving schweinshaxe and kartoffelklöĂe and Augustiner beer.
How was it? I have only heard negative things from friends who tried it and rumours that the âexpected chefâ from Milan never came to the US.
I liked the vongole. Good seafood flavor suffused and sauce was quite âcremosaâ - seems it was done risottata. The tagliatelle bolognese was OK - a bit saucy (Iâm used to it much drier) and I prefer the noodles a bit thinner/flatter. Swordfish Milanese was dry and kind of bland. Ossobuco with risotto giallo alla Modenese was mixed - risotto was rather good (but not as runny as that Iâve had in Milan), ossobuco had a bit more of a (red wine?) gravy going on, a touch thick. To start, the pate was good, a bit sweet with the onions (tasted like they were cooked down in Marsala).
Overall I thought it was mixed, not as good as any of the places I tried in Milan, tbh. I get that theyâre kind of new, so perhaps they need to work out a few things. For now it definitely reminds me of a decent neighborhood restaurant and less of a destination place. I did like the vongole, though, and the pate was pretty good. Iâm not rushing back, but Iâm open to trying it again if dining companions are in the mood for that kind of thing. Admittedly part of that is based on the idea that itâs a restaurant from Italy.
Pecking House (NYC) fried chicken pop up on Sawtelle. Heard a lot of buzz about them during covid. Iâm traveling too much this month otherwise I would have made a trek out West.
I went to Pecking House in May in Brooklyn and it was really bad. Flavors didnât work together, and the chicken was fried poorly, so you could taste all the oil. I am not sure how mass frying usually works, but the restaurant had probably 50 pieces of chicken pre-fried just sitting there.
I guess if youâre in the area, give it a shot. The hype is such that it must sometimes be good, but donât rush.
*i admittedly ordered the spicy chicken sandwich at the serverâs suggestion instead of the OG. Maybe the PH sandwich is noticeably better.
Speaking of which (kinda, sorta), has anyone been to Tuk Tuk recently? The early reports were really, REALLY mixed.
Ponchos Tlyaudas is absolutely delicious. I love the blood sausage too. Everyone around me got the blue corn but me. Maybe I am thinking too much into it.
Poppy & Seed at Anaheim Packing District. Been on my list for a while. Came in with moderate expectations and was pleasantly surprised by the food. Portions are kinda precious though.
Octopus well grilled with beans and chili crunch. Yum
Fried squash blossoms filled with ricotta. I didnât get any but everybody said these were delicious.
Three cheese ravioli with peas, pea tendrils and mushrooms. My daughter said we should have ordered more. Peas very sweet.
Spaghetti carbonara. Good consistency on the sauce and properly rendered pancetta.
Pork chop pretty good. Better than mine.
Hanger steak well cooked. The potatoes were yummy. Lot of leaves which I didnât know if they belonged.
The table really enjoyed the veggies. Crispy Brussels and mushrooms.
Nice chilled French red wine with some bubbles. Better than the first bottle of Pinot from Santa Barbara.
