That cheese shot looks delicious.

C for Chinese is the phrase, I believe.

Feeling great, and my taste buds were dancing. Funny thing is I have a relative (who would otherwise never eat at a C rating establishment) say she really liked the charsiu. :sob::sob::sob: That will be our little FTC secret.

It was a moment of wordplay revelation which led me to purchasing a $10 tray of uni at Mitsuwa Market, then off to El Pollo Loco for a side of buttered corn. The unicorn pairing was definitely more delicious than just the sum of its parts.

Afterwards, I thought about why I liked it: The slightest addition of black pepper, combined with the butter added to the El Pollo Loco corn, as well as the corn’s inherent “starchiness” and husked texture, combined with the uni for a neat complexity.

It was a “UNIque” taste. (Uppercase/lower case combo word trademarked, J_L 2016/06/13).

Glad I went to UNIversity in the UNIted States for fine tUNIng of my word skills… (though most readers would probably be UNImpressed by this)

You’re both really good at mashups.

I picked up onigiri/omusubi (rice balls) from the Omusbi Gonbei pop-up at the Torrance outpost of Mitsuwa yesterday. The rice balls were quite hefty, and three was more than enough for lunch. My favorite was the one with grilled salmon and cod roe, but the onigiri with takana (pickled mustard greens) had a delightful salty tartness. The ten-musu (shrimp tempura musubi) was a little rubbery and greasy, but I polished it off anyway. My only other complaint is that the seaweed is soggy - even if you eat your meal there.

I also purchased Mitsuwa’s vegetarian tofu okonomiyaki (savory pancake) and sekihan (beans and rice) for dinner. The okonomiyaki was a little dense, but otherwise tasted like normal okonomiyaki because frankly the predominant tastes are always going to be the Worcestershire-heavy okonomiyaki sauce and mayo. Truth be told, I added katsuobushi (dried, smoked bonito flakes) as a topping, thus negating its vegetarian virtues. The sekihan was nice and chewy.

Omusubi Gonbei is going to be at the Japanese Gourmet Fair at Mitsuwa in Torrance until 6/20. Other vendors are selling crab bentos, satsuma age (fried fish cakes), soup bases, seafood from Hokkaido, and baumkuchen (German cakes that are popular in Japan). Here’s the link for the gourmet fair: Japanese Gourmet Fair | Mitsuwa Marketplace | A Japanese Grocery Store | Open 365 days a year!

Hi @MaladyNelson,

Thanks for the report. Bummer about the soggy Nori.

Sadly, the nori (seaweed) was soggy. I wish they wrapped the nori in plastic, but I still like the omusubi (rice balls).

The dumplings look like XLB.

@MaladyNelson: such beautiful pics, as always. Is the shrimp tempura buried in rice?

Thanks so much for the compliment, @paranoidgarliclover! I’ve been working on improving my photography this year.

Indeed, the shrimp tempura is buried in the center of the rice.

Days and weeks late, but here it is…

Many thanks to @J_L for mentioning Chaumont way back when. The pastries are insane (in a good way). The shatter on the croissant was amazing. The croissant was a bit sweeter than I expected, but not in a bad way.

Partner’s homemade quiche. Heh.

Chilaquiles from the Beverly Hills Farmer’s Market. “Spicy” is SURPRISINGLY spicy…

Scallops special at Santa Monica Seafood. Scallops were perfectly cooked, but I was still hungry after finishing them…

No, Holy Cow isn’t (nearly) as good as Maple Block, but it’s close by and totally respectable.

Wow Weiner Mo…, Your in my neck of the woods . Glad you liked this place . I had the lamb riblets . Pelmini , and the borscht which was almost as good as my Lithuanian grandmas . The only difference was the vinegar . Their cuisine doesn’t use it .
I hope you made it out to Companion Bakery on the west side . We have plenty of great ones . But this one stellar .

Hi @paranoidgarliclover - Love Chaumont. Glad you made it to BH. I haven’t posted anything yet. I wanted to message you to see if we were there at the same time. But I was with other people and they were getting antsy, especially the guys .

Oh yeah… Your pictures look great!

I’m suspicious of any San Gabriel place that has an A rating. Doesn’t mean I’m right, just means I start from a place of skepticism.
