The dreaded high yess rating did not materialize.

Moos is an interesting pick at 9, but I haven’t been. What are everyone’s thoughts?

I’m surprised camphor is so low and gjusta/gjelina are not included.

But otherwise the list seems pretty reasonable.

I’m glad to see Kato and Anajak flipped from the last list earlier this year.

Moo’s is absolutely delicious. Worth a trip for sure.
Quarter Sheets as the top pizza spot is no surprise.
Melisse seems a bit low. Mozza too. Dunsmoor too.
I’ve never had a good meal at Kismet. Has anyone else?
Smorgasborg is not a restaurant. At all.
60-63 is an elite sequential 4 this low down the list. (Sei, Mini Kabob, Mariscos Jalisco, Majordomo)

no real complaints re: top 10. Pretty much the restaurants i’d recommend to anyone coming to LA. (except moos as I’ve never had their food outside of Smorgasborg which I dont’ think is a good barometer) . Ya’ll know my love for Kato, Anajak, Hayato - my 3 favorite spots in LA.

disclaimer: kato, anajak, providence, n/naka, morihiro are clients

same exact top 10 as last year except sub taco maria for holbox

moved rankings around.

Nothing new came into LA that would disturb that top 10 imo.

Feels like Dunsmoor should already be in the LA top 25.

Per usual, BA is doing a lot of work highlighting middle-Eastern cuisine.

I think my biggest FTC failure is I’ve still not been to republique save for a mango pie pick up

I note (sadly)

  • Shunji’s Japanese Cuisine is not included.
I do not live in a city where Shunji’s does not make top 10-20.

  • Tsubaki at #11 feels off (to me) - it’s fine but never blows me away. I can think if 1/2 dozen izakaya I would rank higher that Tsubaki, but I suppose it’s trendier/more glamourous (or maybe just does the publicity game better).

The Shunji omission is just ridiculous. Makes me wonder if there’s something personal going on.

Guessing Shibumi was also snubbed again?

Yes

would love some suggestions on izakayas that are better than Tsubaki 0_0

Izakaya Hero

Just about to suggest Hero too.

My favorite izakaya and one that is also better than Tsubaki is Kinjiro.

Yup!
Kinjiro is always great.

Oooo I’ve been to Hero a couple of times and it’s always been amazing! Can’t wait to try Kinjiro as I’ve never been!

I do agree that if you consider Tsubaki as a pure Japanese izakaya it would be a hard sell at #11. This is something they struggled with especially in the beginning (How Japanese should they be or can they be?). When I consider Tsubaki as a whole dining experience and breaking out of the mold of that izakaya box without that expectation of being an izakaya, along with the community they’ve built, I think they definitely deserve to be near the top of the list.

Also: I am a super regular so I am completely biased sorry not sorry.

My first grievance would be that Maude is a top 5 restaurant and surely a top 101 restaurant. Proving once again that there is only one useful restaurant list: Michelin. I have no complaints about Michelin’s star ratings for LA. This, list by contrast:

Hahaha!

Great points - I may be a puritanical when it comes to Izakaya.
And I like both owner quite a bit.
And I like both restaurants quite a bit (for me Ototo >> Tsubaki)

But 11??? Can’t get there.at all.
