beat me to it! was just going to post this link. Tejal Rao is definitely my favorite food writer covering the LA area
i love donuts. i love all these places. donuts can do no wrong
she’s covering more of la than our resident critic lately.
*donut you philistines
Doughnuts fried to order! About time.
The NYT is covering us more than our own paper in general.
There’s just no time for the LAT food section to review LA restaurants when they have other important concerns, like determining whether leftovers are edible or making sure the word “iconic” is used in every article If Addison isn’t doing much I don’t know why they can’t have someone like Jenn Harris step up and write longer reviews
Addison did have a full review this past Sunday (of the Disneyland restaurant)
her reviews might be pretty sus. she just posted photos (5th in carosol) from Food as Art pop up by Mad Refslund co-founder of Noma and didn’t mention anything about 80% of guests leaving the dinner mid way through according to another guest IG story. Unfortunately they didn’t post any additional story to clarify.
h/t @PorkyBelly I’m suprised there hasn’t been more talk of this… where’s Max Shapiro when you need him?
Why did the guests end up leaving?
info i have is 3rd hand, so you’ll have to ask @PorkyBelly but hopefully someone there can chime in.
Could be contractual or a Guild thing. Or the editors simply don’t care about long reviews, would rather have interactive stuff like maps.
Jenn Harris’s actual published capsule reviews seem quite solid to me.
That her short blurb for an eight-photo Instagram post didn’t mention people leaving a pop-up early doesn’t seem like it’s exactly an indictment of her professionalism.
now I want a donut.
Sidecar has come to town - Fairfax & 3rd
Butter + Salt & Maple Bacon
My first Sidecar donut(s). Had to start w/the much swooned over Butter + Salt. It was still warm & I much swooned over it. I don’t usually go for cakey donuts but it is fluffy-ish, not dense, and that butter+salt glaze! Hubs got Maple Bacon. We shared the Passion Fruit Pavlova - it was our favorite. Wish there was a little more crunchy meringue on top of the whipped cream but it was delicious - like Republique’s Passion Fruit Cream Pie had a baby donut. So good.
As a lifelong East Coaster just getting to know the LA food scene thanks to my daughter’s college choice, I am definitely impressed by the strength of the LA donut game. Same for the bagels!
I know. Them’s fighting words. But, seriously, it’s really good.
