Breakfast Burrito at Tacos Por Favor Venice.
That pizza looks like cheesy goodness.
I previously posted, inquiring about Maccheroni Republic⌠heard crickets. Whatâs your opinion as a whole: atmosphere, food?
I love olive oil cake. But my experience - eating & baking - has been w/cornmeal or masa flour. So no, I donât think itâs supposed to be dense, cakey, or chiffony. Itâs like a sweet, very moist cornbread w/berries.
Yuko kitchen (mid-city) is a favorite in our house.
Good Food trekking!

Thanks to @TonyC i tried the uni risotto and it was fucking delicous, who needs maruhide or officine brera.
Itâs my seared uni in a box
The tripe, tongue, and tendon stew was so offal it could play for the LA lakers.
Locally forced foie gras
So soft it signed an endorsement deal with charmin
Hipster new zealand salmon swims upstream because downstream is too mainstream
The pics are great; the comments - priceless.
My fav comment.
Farm to table. Sustainable.
I really enjoyed the place. The place is on the small side and a bit noisy (but not unpleasantly so). The line last wk at 7PM was INSANE. Fortunately, my friend had made reservations. Not sure if that line is typical, but Iâd make reservations just to be safe.
Ambiance is upscale causal. Certainly appropriate for a date night, although itâs not a place where youâd get dress to the nines. The patio (where we sat) was quite pleasant and nicely isolated from the street.
Partner had polenta + lamb, which was also delicious. Iâm not close enough to the other dining partners to dip into their food (they both had housemade pasta dishes), but enjoyed what they had (one, however, is not at all picky w/ food). Iâd skip our apps. Iâd certainly be happy to go back to try the rest of the menu. Given the portion size, prices arenât bad at all (IMHO).
Service was a bit odd only b/c we had one server who was a bit surly. Otherwise, service was unremarkable.
While waiting in line from the restroom, one other customer struck up a conversation w/ me and said he had been to the place many times and had always enjoyed it.
Not a revelation, not innovative, but a good neighborhood joint. I wouldnât drive from the OC to come here, but, if the location isnât terribly inconvenient, I think itâs well worth a visit.
I probably wonât go back THAT soon, simply b/c, even w/ the Metro, partner and I are a bit impatient and like to eat soon after we feel hunger pains. Heh. Besides, I want to try the other places in DTLAâŚ
Good report. You gave a good sense of the place. I had previously inquired about Maccheroni. We wanted to take my oldest and his girlfriend downtown. Heâs not a super adventurous eater - kind of a pasta, meat, potatoes, no spicy kind of guy. They eat so much Mexican, so didnât want to do that.
L.A. chefs are so busy trying to outdo each other and themselves, you canât find a place like Peteâs Cafe, that will satisfy mom, dad, kids, grandparents, et al.
One question: No alcohol, wine at M.R.?
Thanks again trekker!
Not much of a drinker, so I donât normally comment on alcohol since I donât drink more than a few sips.
They definitely have at least a few wines on the menu. Think partner got a pinot grigio. We were both very âmehâ about it. I vaguely recall reading in Yelp reviews that they have a BYOB (no corkage?) policy.
I think the place would work well for the unadverturous while also appealing to those who like food. Much of the crowd appeared to be in their late 20âs/early 30âs, so depending on what your childâs age, that might also be a plus.
Okay. I asked because, I believe initially they had no wine license. The no corkage BYOB - great btw - is probably a holdover from that time.
That pretty much describes him perfectly.
Thanks for getting back to me!
Plan Check Sawtelle
PCB and Pastrami Gravy Fries.
Grand Central Market
Took mom for her first trip to check it out. She had a blast.
Horse Thief - 3 Meat Plate - Brisket, Rib Tips, and Pulled Pork w/ Sweet Potato Casserole (covered by the bread) and Mac & Cheese. Tasty as usual. Sergio was in the house.
Bombo - Clams and Mussels steamed with Sausage, Fried potatoes, Chickpeas, and Onions over Egg Papardelle in a Lobster Broth.
Iâve had Bombo a number of times when visiting GCM in the past. When they first opened, it was very good, but then slipped a bit in quality. I stopped going. Mom saw it and really wanted it. I was reluctant⌠But today it was awesome. A complete 180 from previous visits. That stock was super concentrated. Delicious. Everything was generous in portion sizes (they changed their serving bowls, which are both deeper and wider). Pleasantly surprised.
Sticky Rice - Crying Tiger - Not really spicy. More lime juice flavor than anything, but that steak was cooked beautifully rare. Very tender. Sticky rice was meh. GF makes better papaya salad. But that steakâŚLOL
Wexlerâs Deli - Macarther Park - Fatty, tender pastrami. For the most part the bread was good, but the outer crust was very tough to chew through.
McConnellâs Ice Cream - A tasting of Eureka Lemon and Marrionberry (my fav), Churros Con Leche (not bad), and Whiskey Caramel Pecan. The alcohol obviously affected the stability of the ice cream here. Unfortunately, I could barely taste any whiskey.
Mom also got 2 brats from Berlin Currywurst (a veal/ pork and a beef/jalapeno/cheese) and a Mole Brownie from Valerie Confections to take home for later that evening. She said they were good and enjoyed them.
EDIT: Oh yeah, also had a few teaser carnitas tacos from Villa Moreliana. Mom loved them.
That steak does look great.

Marrionberry
[/quote] Hilarious name. I wonder how many customers get the joke.
LOL câmon, itâs a real berry! Although it is crack-like.
I did spell it wrong. oops. Only 1 âRâ.
Marionberry

Thanks to @KTLA and the recent GQ list I ordered the roasted butternut squash with dukkah and it did not disappoint.
Unfortunately the chicharones were almost inedible, they spent way too much time in the fryer and turned into hunks of carbon.
The squid stuffed squid was very good. Stuffing a squidâs tentacles back into its own body and into my mouth only seemed appropriate.
Fried biscuits with tangerine thyme marmalade and vanilla ice cream
Thatâs a bold statement.
âThatâs a bold statement,â said Nicole Rucker at Cofax.
Thatâs funny
Costco has a preseasoned carne asada in one of their meat cases. I mentioned this in a post I created last night. Itâs our forth time having this, and the forth time our family gave it a thumbs-up. No pics, but I will do so the next time. I think itâs about $8-9/lb. This, along with salsas, tortillas and chips from the Mexican food stand at the Mar Vista FM made for an enjoyable meal.
I âforcedâ the kids to make agua frescas of their own choosing - pineapplee-mango. It came out more like a smoothie despite straining it, because of all the fiber, but was tasty. I say âforcedâ because they assumed Iâd buy agua frescas for them. Many kids these days have little or no concept of the efforts and the fruits of labor, of using their hands in conjunction with their mind, adding a dose of fortitude.
I made margaritas - shaken not blended - using Mexican limes, DeLeon Reposado tequila, Cointreau and Clement Creole Shrubb (nice pronounced orange flavor). Mexican limes are like large kumquats - a labor to squeeze enough to get a drinkable amount of juice - but well worth the flavor.
About a liter of margarita was gone in a couple of hours but no hangover!
