Olive oil fried eggs at Friends and Family. Got there early for my thanksgiving pie pickup and this looked good. Turns out it’s pretty good.
Beautiful.
Not to cast aspersions but… did you get a new phone???
LOL still my potato iPhone 12. The lightning was perfect and I did use vivid for that pic
Light pre Thanksgiving dinner at El Farolito. They converted the parking lot into outdoor seating so much less waiting. It was still 80-90% full the day before Thanksgiving. The chips and spicy salsa are still top notch.
My brother in law said tampequena was delicious.
Carnitas plate always hits
My wife loves the crunchy chicken tacos
Chile releno and beef taco.
The guindilla pepper is a nice touch.
Was in LBC digging thru some vinyl and decided to stop by the classic Cambodia Town restaurant Phnom Penh Noodle Shack. Beef stew noodles with a side of the bone broth. Delicious tomatoey stew with very tender tendon, tripe, and beef.
Redondo Pier . Everybody was happy especially the kids. It was their first time hammering away at crab legs.
Which Korean place did you go to? Is that a seafood soup I am looking at?
My bet is Pacific Fish Center, am I right?
Yes Pacific Fish Center. My in laws always go to this one out of habit. I’m pretty sure the menu at the other place is identical.
That is the spicy fish stew. They bring this at the end of the meal with rice and kimchi.
We wish they would give you more sturdy plates instead of the flimsy paper plates. They’ve been doing it the same way for decades. Restaurant was pretty much full at 6pm.
OG Hanbat Shul Lung Tang.
If you haven’t seen Beef on Netflix there is a scene with Hanbat.
“Can we just enjoy this meal?” Something like that
Clark Street Diner. Only too late did I see the green hot sauce bottle on the table, which the chilaquiles desperately needed. Ranchero sauce was excellent, but the palate got fatigued without enough acid or brightness. Sonora pancakes were a bit dry. Maple syrup not overly sweet. Eggs benedict were very tasty.
First time ordering from Viet Noodle Bar (Santa Monica location). Fried fish + bitter melon with tumeric rice, pho ga (which the menu said was Hanoi style), and spring rolls.
Really tasty. As I was driving home, the aroma was subtle but had a nice slight funk.
I got bitter melon mixed up with winter melon, so the melon was way more bitter than I was expecting. Whoops. But the fish and rice were wonderful.
Pho ga broth had a simple, “clean” taste and was super comforting.
Spring rolls (not pictured) fine (but much smaller than i’m used to).
I might put this place on our regular rotation.
Snuck into Budonoki a few nights ago. No photos because it was dark and my camera is so bad that I couldn’t be bothered.
Honestly, though, I might have to amend my original take which is that it ain’t a spot for FTCers. It might be a spot for FTCers. At the very least, it’s a fun night out. They serve a deconstructed naem that is pretty rad–crispy, lemongrassy rice, sausage, and a slaw. You get most of the funk of a true Isaan sausage and some really delicious crispy rice goodness. Their chef’s salad is also pretty damn addictive. Also gonna casually endorse the seafood pancake. They’ve the usual problem of doing slightly hipper renditions of classics, so if you’re comparing this to the Isaan sausage you had in Udon Thani you’re gonna be disappointed. But the soft serve slaps.
I dunno, I think I’m talking myself into a casual endorsement. Maybe give them a little more time to get dialed in. (I think they’re like a Thai izakaya and the sooner they figure that out the better.)
Their playlist kinda kills me. It feels like a millenial wedding dance party after the grandparents have gone home. What I’d really like is for some moody Thai country.
For The Win
Triple cheeseburger is pretty hefty.
Shout out to their really good ranch dressing, saves their thin ass fries.
Los Albaniles - Tijuana
Al pastor, carne asada and barbacoa de borrego tacos.
Cream Pan - Lomita
Tonkatsu sando
La Huasteca - Buena Park
Mole enchilada trio
And shout out to their really amazing seafood soup (no pictures)
Lupe’s #2 - Boyle Heights
Can’t get enough, specifically the chile relleno burrito and combo green chile beef.
When their kkakdugi is especially fizzy, and all the staff are ignoring you because the news is on, that is my favorite time to be in Hanbat. I love that soup
Wait we have roasted goose in SGV? Was that a special order?
Our family friend called ahead, so a good idea to order it. They have a hot bar out front for lunch specials, and at least a duck is always ready to be chopped up. I think they might keep a goose handy each day.
How was it?
