Potato — safe to eat?

Hello. If my internet searching is accurate, a potato that looks like this is still okay to eat? It’s still very firm to the touch.

Depends on what the discoloration is. It’s not mold?

Not mold like I see on other food. It really seems more like a black-purplish “flat” discoloration (no fuzzy texture… no diff texture at all, actually).

YMMV but I wouldn’t eat it not because it’s going to make you sick which I doubt but it’s still not what I expect a potato to look like. Probably a fault due to growing conditions. Potatoes are cheap enough i don’t need to eat iffy ones

This looks like a blighted potato. I would not eat it. I wouldn’t even toss in my compost. The old food manufacturer in me would even send a note and photo to the grower.

Thanks. This was from our home delivery food prep meal kit, and we’ve had two deliveries now with at least one potato affected.

Informing @SpockSpork since it’s technically his account.

Google search potato black spot bruising.

I did look it up and a few times, actually.

Assuming it’s not blight, then it might be more of what @aaqjr said (not dangerous but not what you expect a potato to be; there could also be an issue w/ off flavors).

I’ve actually contacted a professional composter I know to see if they think it’s okay to compost.

no its not eatable.

Update: professional composter said it’s actually fine to compost. So makes me less guilty about tossing such potatoes in the future.
