But it’s missing the tiny dessert compartment!
Omnivore dinners all sold out.
Ha! Thanks for checking!! One more reason to skip going to WF for now… Enjoy those Jalapenos. I’m lucky my mom makes her Curtido by the buckets… so I put them on EVERYTHING… P and I even have this story…
When we first started dating and he was working the overnights, I would make him sandwiches (usually hame or turkey) with my mom’s famous Curtido. Well one day I bought Pastrami and made him a sandwich and he comes back in the morning a little upset… “You didn’t put in the Jalapenos”. Now my mom grew up on Jim’s Pastrami… And there is one thing a good Chicana does not do… is put Jalapenos in Pastrami… But the next day I gave in… and put in Curtido in the Pastrami… That morning…“You were right… Japanenos don’t belong with Pastrami”
–Dommy!
My wife loves curtido. If you have a recipe that you can share that would be cool.
We put those pickled jalapenos on everything.
Arturo’s Puffy Tacos (Whittier)
We literally live five minutes away. It’s great and they are doing well, but that five minute drive home really affects the tacos…not as crispy and delightful…and the salsas were on the side.
Sure! It’s very similar to this one except… she doesn’t use any other herb other than the Bay Leaf and the Mexican Oregano. She cuts the Jalapenos into Spears. She also doesn’t cook for 10 minutes… she cooks maybe for 5 just to get a little color in the onions (She does not add garlic as it can turn colors). She also does not give them a water bath. Just straight into the jars.
we’re pros at eating inside the car now. Bring a cooler for drinks and buy wetnap singles.
We had some working on school or work so we all couldn’t go. Next time we’ll eat it in the car.
I got to the Maude matzo ball soup and while the matzo balls were fine (much better than the leaden things from Birdie G’s), the soup was weird, although weird in a different way than the weird chicken soup from Birdie G’s. Somehow Maude’s chicken soup tasted like they had squeezed an entire lemon into the soup. Can’t anyone make normal chicken soup?
On the good news front, I am beyond thrilled with the random bottle of red wine I picked up from Maude and that is saying something because I am rarely thrilled with a random bottle of wine I pick up anywhere. This was a Pinot Nero di Toscana. Really lovely and not that expensive. I think restaurants often have access through their usual suppliers to better wines than the average liquor store or even better liquor stores, since I am rarely happy with a random bottle that I pick up from Wally’s or Wine House or even K&L.
Also picked up a random white – an Australian Riesling – from Maude and looking forward to opening that.
So I would say if you want to go support restaurants, go pick up wine from Maude. Since the wine was very reasonably priced, I don’t think they are doing customary restaurant mark-ups.
P.S. Just searched on Wine Searcher for the bottle I picked up from Maude’s and it is showing only limited distribution in the U.S. and only at a few wine shops in New York, supporting my conclusion that restaurants can usually get their hands on better stuff than is available at liquor stores in California.
how much was this bottle? sounds great
You know I was kind of wondering that myself since I didn’t get a receipt and bought it as a last minute impulse buy, but I just checked my credit card statement and I paid $66.80 for two bottles of wine with tax and I distinctly remember that the Australian Riesling that I have not yet opened was $22, so I guess around $41? Wine Searcher says its $25 or $27 at retail in New York, so still a markup over retail but it doesn’t appear to be available in California and I enjoyed it immensely more than a random bottle at $27 or even $35 that I would pick up here in L.A.
2017 Il Chiuso Castello di Ama.
A dear friend (who unfortunately has no taste in wine) sent me a half case of not inexpensive California wine that was so bad it went down the sink, so I’m happy with my Maude purchase.
Awww you should have made vinegar with the crappy wine! That’s what I do with all the high ABV California bottles people bring to dinner parties
Next time you have wine you want to dump down the drain, I would be happy to take them off your hands.
That’s a very noble and ecologically sound response!
Alas, I tried my second bottle of wine from Maude – the $22 Australian Riesling – and it was insipid. I was disappointed because I thought that Australian Riesling could be a great thing that I had not yet discovered, but it was not. I have had some nice relatively inexpensive Rieslings from Long Island and from the Finger Lakes in New York, but this wine was Trader Joe’s quality. Oh well, I had my lovely Pinot Nero di Toscana. Can’t win them all.
Little bro picked up sushi at his favorite Taiko in Irvine and reported that calling and picking up was pretty easy (probably easier than usual, as that place usually has an enormous line)
Sushi Noguchi pick up
Supplemented with Tokyo Central food we made at home. Shrimp tempura. Yellowtail collar.
Is tito’s open? what about el abajeno?
All Day Baby (Biscuit Window)
I can say that this is one of the best biscuits I’ve ever eaten. And the bacon breakfast biscuit was a really winner…super thick and crispy bacon…and usually, I don’t enjoy jam with my breakfast sandwiches…I rather liked the contrast the jam provided. The chowpup wolfed down the bacon and sausage sandwich I got. Picked up some extra biscuits for tomorrow.
Republiqué -
We love the passionfruit raspberry cream pie. So I picked up a whole one to enjoy for the week. Also grabbed the mac & cheese, tomato soup, and salad dressings for weekday consumption…and a few pastries for my parents.
Chef Jimmy Sugishita (Raku)-
His chirashi box is both lovely and delicious. Each item is carefully prepared and thoughtfully placed in the lovely box. I love that it includes Raku’s soy sauce and fresh wasabi. While the rice and fish were really good, I may have loved the tamagoyaki and shiitake mushrooms a bit more.
This chirashi is getting super popular…there were quite a few people waiting for pick up when I arrived…I even got to meet with a member of our FTC community while I was here.
Sweet Lady Jane -
Quick stop to pick up chocolate cake for my brother. It’s become one of his favorites from the city…also I owed him a favor.
Shout out to the kind FTCer I ran into today. They were able to hook me up with Antico’s strawberry shortcake ice cream on their way home from their own city takeout adventure! It was fresh spun so I’m letting it set back up in the freezer before eating it later tonight.
Tito’s and Abajeno are both closed unfortunately
