make your reservations now because ori and genevieve have another massive hit with saffy’s. similar flavors (and volume level) as bavel with the addition of delicious meat skewers cooked over charcoal.

the appetizers are very @Clayfu friendly and are a great start before the main meat event.

hummus ful - slow cooked fava beans, cumin, lemon, fermented serrano, soft egg, challah

delicious with that perfect egg

roasted carrots - meyer lemon labneh, crispy shallots, ras el hanout, cilantro blossoms

I was expecting some more flavor and sweetness from the carrots

tomatoes smoked eggplant purée, feta, cinnamon, sesame, savory, cilantro

bursting with flavor

zucchini blossoms - whipped feta, sesame, grated tomato, green zhoug

perfectly fried rivaling felix

green falafel - tahini, beet zhoug, amba, hearts on fire, dill

great flavor and texture

shishito peppers - amba tahini, anchovy breadcrumbs, lemon zest

had me at anchovy breadcrumbs

shawarma - lamb & beef, lettuce, tomato, sumac onions, tahini, red ajika, laffa

this was cooked using a wood-fired spit which I’ve never seen before. it really made a different because the smoke immediately jumps out as soon as you take a bite, delicious. I only wish we got the larger portion.

pork kebab - garlic, shallots, black pepper, urfa, cumin

lamb kebab - salt

lamb kebab - onions, parsley, black pepper, all spice

chicken shishlik - cumin, cinnamon, green fenugreek, sumac

mixed beef cuts shishlik - red onion, parsley, nutmeg marinade

laffa, tahini chopped salad, chili crunch, amba

tear off some piping hot laffa, grab a meat of your choice, add chili crunch and dip in the tahini. if you like gyros you’ll love this. chicken was the highlight, crispy skin and succulent thigh meat. the cinnamon seasoning was surprisingly good.

Any outdoor seating yet? The Eater write up mentioned it was coming.

There are about 4 small 2 top tables outside

there were tables outside but it looked like they were only being used as a waiting area to have drinks. I didn’t see anyone actually eating outside.

Protip:

  1. 4 hours metered parking on Fountain Ave
  2. Ask for at least 2 orders of laffa right when you place your skewer order. Otherwise, by the time your second order of laffa comes, the skewers will be cold since you’re only given 1 laffa to start
  3. Take a free personality test at the Church of Scientology across the street and master the force like a Jedi or Sith once you’re ready to mortgage your home

That’s exactly what I thought looking at their photos.

proier tip:
place another laffa order right when they drop the kebabs at your table. that way the second laffa won’t get cold and will come out piping hot by the time you’re finished with the first. french laundry style.
