NIce! looks like what Sun Nong Dan used to look like
Hakata Ikkousha used to have some absolutely amazing karaage but at the beginning of the pandemic, their management and/or chefs changed and so did their karaage recipe. I find it greasy and terrible now.
What’s everyone’s favorite chicken karaage in the South Bay currently?
That’s a better list than the Eater one.
I really miss oumi sasaya that was one of my favs in the South Bay
Hear, hear. RIP Oumi Sasaya…
might have to hit al-watan up for takeout sometime next week.
have confirmed that shin-sen-gumi yakitori has a few outdoor tables for lunch so we’ll almost certainly be stopping there at some point next week. any dishes particularly recommended over others? things to avoid?
That curry udon.
And the tempura mochi!
Make sure to hit Zam Zam as they are in the same center. I usually get a lamb biryani at Zam Zam (after 4pm usually) followed by some sheekh kabob and mixed tandoori at Al Watan. Love how spicy their meats are and the fresh naan.
Try to reserve a table at Torimatsu instead. This chicken specialist is so delicious. The chicken stuffed renkon is awesome. They also serve a raw chicken with ponzu and wasabi which is pretty tasty if your adventurous. Keep calling, they will tell you what time to call back to make a reservation as they are usually too busy during dinner service to answer the phone. And they have outdoor dining.
will try for dinner maybe–but they’re not open for lunch and we need some lunch options.
Love the different varieties of Naan they offer.
Not a thread about lunch options, but some South Bay eateries were/are only doing outdoor dining for lunch and not for dinner (Tendon Tempura Carlos Jr and Wadatsumi). So you may want to clarify that specifically when you call places.
yes, i’ve been asking specifically about that.
we ate lunch at shin-sen-gumi yakitori in gardena today. we got there right at 11.30 and scored one of two outdoor tables. the other was taken by a solo diner at 11.31. (there was a third as well but it was folded up and not set out.) not too long after noon the restaurant was full–and on my trip to the restroom i noted that people didn’t seem particularly spaced apart. also didn’t notice any vaccine status checking (which is not to say that it wasn’t happening at all; but neither the missus nor i were asked any questions when we went in to to the restroom).
the food itself was solid if nothing out of the ordinary. but on this trip, great food is trumped by good food available outdoors.
i noted that jidaiya ramen is in the same strip and also has a couple of outdoor tables set out for lunch. we might grab one of those later this week.
i just called and, alas, no outdoor dining at torimatsu. if the pandemic ever ends we will catch them then.
now to see if i will ever be able to get through to torihei…
that’s been my experience of late
of life or of meals at shin-sen-gumi?
