TnT Aloha Cafe in Torrance is located adjacent to the HMart/Sprouts shopping center on PCH. It is what Gardena Bowl used to be, excellent Japanese Hawaiian food with the original recipe for the infamous Portuguese sausage patty.

My go to dishes:

Portuguese sausage and eggs
Portuguese sausage mix (always add togarashi)
Kimchi loco moco
Bacon fried rice
SPAM musubi
Wonton saimin

Thanks! My parents live in Redondo, so I am down in the south bay somewhat frequently. This place looks delish.

Thanks!!

Haven’t tried Happa. Will add it to the list. I had the poke as well - the tuna was good quality but it was way too salty. I do want to try the furikake chicken.

For katsu, I’m pretty sure hte only place my wife will allow in our house these days is Kagura…

And TnT looks promising as well!

Great intel! I love Midoh curry hamburg w/ cheese and they give you a spicy condiment to add which is pretty spicy and of course delicious.

any recs for good yakitori and ramen (not necessarily at the same place) in torrance or environs in establishments where covid regs are likely to be followed? outdoor seating a huge plus if there’s any around.

Izakaya Hasu in Gardena is very good. They have out door seating and you can reserve on Open Table.

Not the best but still good in my opinion, shin sen gumi yakitori they have a large outdoor dining area in the parking lot great for yakitori and a beer.

Torihei had outdoor patio seating (enclosed on most sides, though) when I went a few wks ago. Taste was just fine, although, TBH, I preferred Izakaya Hero in Westwood.

Yakitori in South Bay;

  • Torimatsu: they had outdoor seating a few weeks back. You’ll need to check if it’s still available. Traditional yakitori. No innovation, just trying to perfect the classics at this reliable option.
  • Torihei: they have an outdoor seating area and I think they even have propane heaters. Swings a little bit younger/lively than Torimatsu. Izakaya and oden dishes available.
  • Koshiji: I havent been there since the beginning of the pandemic. But they are a solid option. I would rather go to one of the top two. Dont know the outdoor dining sitch.
  • Hasu: I havent been there in about 5 years, but they are yakitori-centric.

Ramen in South Bay:

  • Josui: tame, but reliable ramen. I user to really like their shio ramen, but I think quality has dropped since they opened. They have a couple outdoor tables.
  • Jidaiya: all kinds of ramen available here. I like their shoyu, Yokohama, and tsukemen options. They have a couple outdoor tables.
  • Rakkan - I have only been to their Little Tokyo location, but it is pretty tasty shoyu ramen. Dont know the outdoor dining sitch.
  • Tomizo: a relative newcomer. They are a miso ramen specialist. I havent been yet. Dont know the outdoor dining sitch.
  • Umemura: been around forever; a cult favorite of many Japanese-American kids. Dont know the outdoor dining sitch.
  • Santouka: solid miso ramen. Nothing exciting, but reliable. There are outdoor tables.
  • Ikkousha: tonkotsu ramen. It’s fine. I havent been since before the pandemic. Unreliable quality.

@MyAnnoyingOpinions had mentioned yakitori, but I think the best dish I had during my sole visit to Torihei was the fish-cake oden. The fish cake is HUGE, and the texture is unbelievable. Broth was comforting w/ a hint of some depth (if that makes any sense).

Tried them last night. Only to-go orders. I got the hamburg spicy curry with spinach and mushrooms. I thought it was pretty good. Similar to Curry House’s (RIP) curry but thicker and richer and the spicy wasn’t spicy to me at all. They don’t have the spicy condiment that you get at the original Midoh but are thinking about it apparently. I’m glad they have hamburg, since Curryfornia doesn’t and CoCo stopped serving it for some reason. Their curry doesn’t fill the Curry House sized hole in my heart (nothing will), but along with Curryfornia, it still satisfies my Japanese curry craving.

Other stuff:

Napolitano with wiener & egg at Spoon House in Gardena:

Pad kana moo krob at Ubon Thai in Torrance:

Camarones a la Diabla at Zacatecas in Hawthorne:

OG Sando (level Hot) at Pinky’s Hot Box in Torrance:

Galbi-jjim with garaetteok added, and banchan at Wooga Sullungtang in Gardena:

RIP Curry House.

I’m really liking the way that Galbi-Jjim looks, what kind of meat are they using?
