FYI - There is a Guisados opening up in Venice. It’s at the corner of N. Venice and Pacific in the former Plancha Tacos location.

Interesting the number of El Ruso mentions, a place I can’t seem to get a carefully prepared taco.

[not very] hot take: 101 is just too many. This is closer to ‘every taco’ than it is to ‘the best’ to the point of not being very helpful imo. And there are still some odd geographic gaps and blind spots so it’s not about representing the whole region.

I have some quibbles with the entries on the list obviously but I’m more put off by the concept than any of the specifics. Kinda fun I guess. Meh.

Mapping the 101 is more functional, should I find myself in any part of town and craving tacos…

Getting the popcorn out hoping to see Bill‘s response. From his writing, and the way he posts, he seems to revel in being the top/only Mexican authority in town

I doubt he’ll go after the LA times in his typical manner, likely would jeopardize freelance gigs from them and other major print publications in the future.

True, just wishful thinking on my part

It would definitely be great

likely a coincidence but Eater just ran a BE piece on al pastor around town

I’ll take the bait and generate some contrived controversy :

Bill’s favorite al pastor Tacos Los Güichos not in LA Times 101 best tacos.

I’m a reader and supporter/subscriber of local news agency LA Taco.

They run a lot of stories on the best tacos around LA and many of the articles are neighborhood specific. They also arrange deals and discounts at taco shops around town for their supporters (kind of like donating to a public radio station and getting discounts at local businesses).

Los GĂźichos is on the list, and Bill contributed to that celebs/chefs piece as well with Los Sabrosos (which I really want to try).

Do think 101 is too many, especially with a lot of repeat taco types. Appreciate the geographical coverage though.

He big upped Ditroit on his Insta last night, a place I quite like, however expensive.

Interesting omission of Juquilita. I did a crawl of Don Cuco, Tire Shop, La Guera a few months back. Don Cuco was definitely better than Tire Shop, but the distinctions weren’t as dramatic otherwise. I’m probably not as discerning as Bill, but I wouldn’t trek to Don Cuco in the way I would for say Chikali or Sabrosos Al Horno.

hot take but i think the best thing at los sabrosos is actually their nance agua fresca - the tacos are decent…

There are 5,500 Mexican restaurants in LA County plus who knows how many trucks and stands plus the list includes OC, so it’s not at all close to “every taco.” Probably they went with 101 because they had no trouble coming up with more than that.
