I logged in for the first time in months to tell everyone about this, and then I saw your question!

Right now the Jons on Santa Monica Blvd near the 101 has the best, juiciest, sweetest most delicious watermelons. I just went there today and almost all of them sound perfectly ripe. It was honestly hard to choose which one to get because each just resonated beautifully.

We still haven’t been going to markets and I’d say we’re at about 50% of whole foods delivery watermelons being good (not to mention when they decide that a honeydew is an acceptable substitution). The one time we got from Erewhon it was good, so maybe we should just accept the $1/lb cost there.

Not watermelon, but of worthy note: Sugar Kiss melons (cantaloupes) are tasting so sweet this week…

Which place has better watermelons right now, Mitsuwa or Tokyo Central? I’m going to Irvine Mitsuwa tomorrow for Modo Donuts but live 5 mins from Tokyo Central in Yorba Linda. This hot weather is making the whole family crave cold watermelon. Bang bang? Maybe I’ll buy 2 and give away a bunch to the in laws.

It’s almost that time again. From this thread over the years I’ve learned

  1. Watermelon in California is not as good as the South
  2. Pick a heavy watermelon
  3. I don’t know how to use the thumping sound method
  4. Has anybody ever heard of this method?

  1. Any other advice or grocery stores/FM vendors you generally get good watermelons?

We end up getting a few per summer from farmers market, Whole Foods, H Mart or Costco. I’d say our batting average is like
25% great
50% good to average
25% terrible

It’s pretty early for watermelons, unless they’re coming from someplace that had a very warm spring.
