Would you believe Glendale, South Pasadena and Hawthorne were "Sundown cities" for the Chinese?

Chandavkl describes how the Chinese restaurant industry survived against all barriers.

Yeah, and of course more than just the Chinese were discriminated against in sundown towns. I believe I first heard about that in a “Good Food” segment about the Green Book.

Wish I could remember which local community actually had posted street signs saying “Negroes and Orientals not desired.”

kinda ironic given how many chinese live in s. pas. now. since i moved to CA, at least one former mayor has been chinese.

Compton was, too.

Similarly for San Marino, Arcadia and Palos Verdes.

Inglewood was solidly white even when I was in high school.

so we won!

Growing up, we never set foot in San Marino or Arcadia. Look at those places now.

I am 83 years old and do remember–It was Glendale of all places!
