Just waiting for some enterprising soul to open a taco stand across the street called ‘Nooo Eat Here Instead’.
Normally I hate infatuation reviews but I agree with most of their takes even if it’s mean spirited and not constructive.
the infatuation review is strange. infatuation usually doesn’t criticize restaurants at all, unless it’s a celebrity / tiktok / influencer restaurant or a restaurant that, for whatever reason, they think doesn’t need to be “taken seriously.” and when they do criticize restaurants, the criticism is usually so mild as to be useless (“this dish didn’t work for me” “there were better options on the menu”).
but my guess is that the reason why infatuation went so unusually hard against yess (other than that the review will get more attention the more mean spirited it was) is because of that bill addison review
On another note does anyone know what’s up with their Resy? I was looking at it a few days ago and almost all the times were available and now it’s seemingly booked for every time for the rest of the month which seems implausible to me.
Definitely implausible. It was literally empty for our last visit. Waitress was asking what they can do different. Probably nothing. It’s not a crowd pleasing restaurant.
Maybe they didn’t pay Resy so their account was suspended, or they cancelled the service.
I bet the Infatuation truly hated it. The reviews are written from the mindset of 20-year olds. Pijja Palace is a full point above Pizzeria Mozza and on par with Providence and Sushi Kaneyoshi. There’s “no music and only scattered conversation” at Hayato so it’s for “Japanese food die-hards only.” Go’s Mart is the highest rated sushi in LA. (I do have fond memories of eating there stoned in my 20s.)
None of this is to disparage the folks here who don’t like Yess. I get it. I’m just saying I can easily see how a 20-something on a limited budget would hate Yess.
I had never read that Hayato review before. Tough look for the Infatuation: “you need to . . . be fine with having no idea what you’re going to eat.”
The Infatuation thinks Dudley Market is the 5th best restaurant in Los Angeles. Lol. They should not legally be allowed to write hit pieces lol. It’s no better than yelp.
bladdison kind of alludes to why there’s a huge discrepancy between his rave review and why it’s ranked 72nd on the 101. tldr; it was the move to tasting menu only.
I don’t have any specific dog in this fight, am not a fan of The Infatuation, and understand that Garrett Snyder is an editor there and that this may be a contradiction.
But he’s not a moron, is pretty plugged into the food scene, and at least judging by his social media presence, eats widely and curiously and has for many years. Maybe you can write him off because of The Infatuation but idk.
Don’t really begrudge anyone their opinion on Yess however. Every food professional I know or am acquainted with loved it. Every civilian found it hit or miss and overpriced.
They may have dropped off Resy because they are switching to Opentable or something. I’ve noticed that this is starting to happen with several restaurants this year. The transition is not always smooth and may explain the lack of availability. I booked a restaurant on Resy and I got a phantom reservation cancellation from Opentable the day before our meal, which was not fun when I had paid a deposit for the meal already (Everything ended up fine and we had a great meal)
ive noticed a handful of restaurants switch from resy and tock to open table
resy is expensive as hell, tock is reasonable, and open table is comparatively cheaper
reservations are back
well now I don’t know what to think
They’re not wrong. Takes a certain kind of individual to persevere to get a res to spend $500+ and 4 hours eating top tier Japanese food in a library.
