Animal 🐖

Still my favorite place in la to eat tasty baby animals.

(new) english pea, yellowfoot, green garlic broth, bone marrow
Underneath the surface are the tasty fungi and pieces of bone marrow, because of course there’s bone marrow. Light and satisfying.

hamachi tostada, fish sauce vinaigrette, peanut, avocado
This has all the flavors of a Vietnamese chicken salad, salty, sour, sweet, tart, herb-y. So perfectly dressed, it’ll make tim gunn jealous.

veal tongue, pickle, apple, salmon roe, black mustard
This has so much going on - smoky tongue, sweet apple, spicy mustard and horseradish, crunchy rye croutons - but it all works together. Love how each bite is different. #tonguespeaksforitself

(new) spicy pork shoulder steak, fermented pineapple, daikon, sesame seed
This was okay, pork was pretty lean, could have used more pineapple or a sauce

previous visits

chicken liver toast

hamachi tostada, fish sauce vinaigrette, peanut, avocado

tamago scramble, bone marrow sushi rice, Japanese pickles, arare
Loved this, the bone marrow gave the rice a nice rich fattiness, but wasn’t over the top.

foie gras, biscuit, maple sausage gravy
Does this dish make my liver look fat? #askingforafriend

boner burger, 420 sauce, jack cheese, poblano, red onion

Heirloom tomato, sweet corn, shiitake, onikasu, maggi ranch

Getting my 5 servings of fruits and vegetables in.

avocado

kumquat

blood orange

strawberry

cherimoya

Foie gras fucking biscuit

Chilaquiles

Hamachi tostada

Truffle cheese omelette

peads and barnetts pork toro, plum char siu, cabbage, kanzuri, green garlic
This very much reminded of the shredded pork in garlic sauce Sichuan dish, only with tender fatty chunks of pork toro.

quail fry, grits, slab bacon, kale, maple jus

tandoori octopus, tamarind, yogurt, kumquat
After a 5 year hiatus this sucker is back and it’s spectacular. You wouldn’t think this would go together on paper but incorporating each ingredient in one bite and it just works. Highlight of the night.

foie gras loco moco, quail egg, spam, hamburger
fat on fat on fat on fat.

cheesecake pudding, guava, strawberry, graham

(new) :peach: aguachile, cilantro, mint, chile de arbol
cold, spicy, sweet, refreshing

(new) sea scallops, leche de tigre, brown butter, fennel
scallops were nicely cooked, leche de tigre tasted like a tart, spicy, orange juice. tasty.

(new) :baby::cow: tartare, green garlic crème fraîche, tomato, montasio frico
not bad, veal was pretty mild and lean, could have used some more assertive flavors.

(new) :chicken: , pomegranate molasses, yogurt, baharat, parsley
interesting use of bahart gave this dish a middle eastern taste. the chef’s put all their heart into this dish.

(new) :eggplant: katsu, yuzu kosho aioli, togarashi, kombu marinated cucumber
delicious, soft and crispy eggplant balanced with the cool aioli. however, this was tiny, about the size of a tea saucer, i could have eaten about 10 of these.

sweetbreads, creamed spinach, hen of the woods, caper, brown butter
perfectly fried little nuggets of gland deliciousness balanced with a nice amount of acid.

foie gras fucking biscuit, maple sausage gravy
the best damn dessert on the menu

Animals consumed :pig2: :rooster: :seedling: :shrimp: :pig: :crab: :octopus: :bacon:

(new) carta di musica, nduja, fennel pollen, lemon
Fine. Stick with the chicken liver toast.

(new) chicken oyster yakitori, smoked paprika, herb creme fraiche
The fish cheeks of the chicken. deliciously tender, crispy, and smoky. science needs to engineer a chicken with more than two oysters.

(new) sugar snap peas, ponzu, green garlic, sesame
nice bite with a tart, nutty sauce.

prawns, roasted garlic, chili lime salt
snappy prawns from new zealand. prime head sucking alert.

crispy pig head, pernil, congri, marinated onion, lime
a croquette of pig head with red beans and rice. okay, a bit dry.

(new) king crab, meyer lemon, furikake, potato, chive
like a king crab shepherd’s pie, delicious. this reminded me of the blue crab simplissime at tesse

tandoori octopus, tamarind, yogurt, kumquat
So much going on here, but like most dishes at animal, eaten all together it’s totally balanced and just works.

Does the 420 sauce actually contain marijuana?

Octopus sounds great…

Lean pork shoulder? That’s weird.

Hi @PorkyBelly,

I love Animal! Glad you liked the Tamago Scramble as well (that Bone Morrow Rice!).

Thanks for the info on the Tandoori Octopus! Can’t wait to try it soon.

I really adore the hamachi tostada. It’s one dish that I can taste in the back of my mouth when thinking of it.

Thanks @PorkyBelly. Looks delicious! I really like the creativity and refreshing sounding dishes Animal is adding these days. And of course finishing it off with something “richer” like their Foie Gras (anything - Biscuit, Loco Moco, etc.).

I started to write almost exactly what @Chowseeker1999 wrote! So I’ll just say ditto!

Had a memorably great meal last night. It was a social occasion so I didn’t get many photos. Carta di musica, tendon chip, charred cabbage, scallops, pig head, pig ear, tongue, rabbit larb, all fantastic.

The prawns were insane. I probably wouldn’t have ordered them but i smelled them at another table. We devoured every scrap except the carbonized antennae. This was 1.5 orders.

Genius dessert, never had anything like it. Soft cheesecake custard on the bottom with crunch from both the sorbet and graham cracker crumbs.

The wine markups were also insane. Occhipinti Frappato goes for $42-48 in stores, here it was $118.

That’s a lot of animal.

Love this report. I know I’ve been going on about Majordomo, but my heart still belongs to Animal.

Still looks great after all these years!

For a place that serves heavy duty food, their sake list, mostly their flavor profile…is on the light side, lol.

Hi @PorkyBelly,

Great pics and report! Oh! Who was it that recommended the tandoori octopus back in the day? And it was gone off the menu for a long time now. I must try it (I strangely keep missing it whenever we go it’s not on the menu).

Was there anything new that you think was a distinct replacement for their Foie Gras Biscut & Loco Moco? Thanks.

I thought the carta di musica was fantastic. Definitely recommend it.

yep, that was me.

unfortunately they don’t have anything that comes close to replacing their foie dishes. on a related note, what would prevent them, or any restaurant, from serving and charging for say just the biscuit and then adding the foie free of charge? i shall coin it the “foie gras-tis”.

2.5 isn’t really insane around here i think. at x3 i’m upset but 2.5 i’m tolerant… dessert looks and sounds crazy!
