I think they meant California Pizza Kitchen.
Oh! CPK has been around so long that I forget that novelty toppings were once, well, a novelty…
The anything-on-pizza trend started at Chez Panisse in 1981. Ed LaDou picked up on it immediately in SF and was shortly thereafter hired by Wolfgang Puck as the opening pizza chef at Spago. LaDou went on to develop the menus for CPK. Hence “California pizza movement.” It’s a pretty dated reference.
In Long Beach, Little Coyote is supposed to be a great NY style pizzeria…1st time I was there 3+years ago, the pizza was excellent, especially & most importantly, the crust was a bit crispy and had just the right amount of chew!..next time I was there, I had a couple of Grandma style slices…way too thick…I ate there last week with visiting friends and shared a sausage pie…crust was terrible!!! thick, soft…really only ate it bc of the sausage & mozzarella! So, they are a big disappointment!
Original owners sold the restaurant.
Wow! really? so soon? sad they dont know how to make great pizza…sure it wont hurt their business! but I wont be back!
I quite enjoyed my pizza from Ghisallo in Ocean Park Santa Monica, which I had for takeout and reheated at home.
Their cacio e pepe slice reminded me of the white grandma slice from Scarr’s – the confit garlic was a nice touch.
I wouldn’t say it’s destination worthy, but a great neighborhood joint or if you’re already in the area
Well, I finally made it to Danny Boy’s in Westwood…Had a chance to chat with Daniel Holzman who is a very nice guy besides being a great chef…he remembered me from my early visit to his DTLA location…he said he agreed with my comment that the crust was too soft and he turned up the heat…This time the crust was considerably better…the regular slice w/ sausage was really flavorful…the cornicione had the nice crispiness…He’s got the Bianco DiNapoli tomatoes for the sauce…very tasty…I told him Im a harsh critic and thought it should still be a bit more crisp…he’s a very gracious human being…something rather rare…the Sicilian slice w/pepperoni was excellent…very nice balance between crisp and chew…much better than Prince St, which in NYC was known for its Sicilian pepperoni slice…I was at Prince St in Burbank about a year ago and it was very disappointing…So Yay! Im thrilled that Danny Boy’s is now in Westwood!
I enjoyed my Danny Boy slices on my visit to the Westwood location last week…
that looks like a great slice…I s that a reheat or from a pie!
agreed!
Does he use a screen? I thought I saw a video where someone was taking a slice from their whole pie at their table and it looked like it was on a screen.
Personally, I’m not as immediately judgmental of a place when I see a screen, as we both know Slice House uses screens.
I didnt watch closely but there were no screen marks on the slices…I must admit in most cases Im pretty “anti-screen”…I was fairly impressed in the improved crust…very tasty! a great addition to Westwood…the area has really uptick in the last few years…drove around a couple times before deciding to park @ Whole Foods…
Friendly PSA: Watch out for the parking guard at that Whole Foods: They will tow the car if they see the owner going off-premises.
Eater covering the local joint in my neighborhood: The Coop Pizza Is a Los Angeles Icon For New York-Style Slices - Eater LA
How authentic a New York slice is it? I don’t know, I’m no expert. I enjoy their pizza and these kind of old school mom and pop places are worth supporting. Cash only.
many thanks for the heads up!
A friend raved about The Coop and took me there…nothing worth returning to unless you’re in the area and craving pizza!
Yep! There is a structure not far from there which isn’t super expensive. It’s worth the piece of mind.
California law allows you to park at privately owned public parking for up to 1 hour
Interesting! That’s usually how long the tow service will take to arrive lol…
