How was the katsu? I just got back from Japan, so my katsu standards are unfairly high at the moment

Been there a while. I dropped by after Balloon Museum & Afuri for a bang bang late December…

I went in mid December for moim (so good! hope they find a new spot soon), and came away equally impressed with the food. Hoping to go back down there soon. The egg salad + relish was weird and cool.

good flavor but it could have been crispier.

I think this current iteration of the cafe has only been open since Christmas according to IG posts.

I’ve had the katsu sandwich during the Moim pop up phase (Moim coffee and Cafe 2001 food) and quite liked it! It didn’t seem to be going for a crispy katsu angle and I liked the way they took it. Would get it again.

I also had the caponata and terrine and they were both also great. I preferred the caponata which was my first time trying it. The staff described it as kind of like a ratatouille and that sold me right there. I think I’ve also tried 3 kinds of tarts here (mango, strawberry, and chocolate) and they’ve all been good.

I did try the coffee and IFNi was an unknown to me too. I got the drop and preferred it once it cooled and I could taste more of it. I also got the iced coffee and not sure if it’s the same roaster but the iced was also quite nice.

I think the most surprising thing to me was the prices. Imo the food is good quality and the prices are reasonable. I’d say the meals are on the light side but prices not out of line considering the quality. If I lived in the neighborhood, I’d probably be going quite often. I also like the environment they’ve put together. It seems pretty quiet right now and just a great place to have a good lunch and relax. I do miss the coffee from Moim but I like the current incarnation and hope it sticks around.

really enjoyed the brunch here. I liked everything @PorkyBelly did. The Smoked trout was probably my favorite thing, the huckleberries are a fantastic addition to the dish. It’s a great affordable brunch/lunch option.

Had a delicious iced roasted hojicha as well.

Hey y’all. Been here twice now.

  • Terrine: super tasty
  • Grilled cheese with Tomato soup: really good rustic soup. Would love a bigger portion of this on its own
  • Chicken noodle soup: Good quality broth but nothing special besides comically thick noodles
  • Hamburg steak: I kinda prefer my hamburg steak more in the meatloaf direction (rather than burger patty) but this was still tasty and well-cooked
  • almond with green grape: I thought this would be like chinese almond jelly but it was more like a panna cotta.

Agree on the food being light but fairly priced given the quality, would come back. They don’t rush anything; I love the easy vibe this place has going for it but worried it won’t last if they gain any sort of popularity. Hope they can scale the experience.

A successful first visit. Described as hash browns, the potatoes certainly felt more latke-like to me, especially with jam and sour cream on the side. I believe the dish as billed as smoked salmon, but while the fish was nice the potato element was the standout of the meal on its own. Caponata decent - I enjoyed the contrasting textures but flavor felt muted and monochromatic. I preferred the accompanying toast to the caponata itself. A little squirt of the lemon from the fish dish helped. Chocolate tart with sour cream is a winner. The tart label is no lie here. I brushed the cocoa powder off the top. Like how this place is legitimately chill. Feels good to sit there.

Is the item on top of the “lower” carrot an example of comically thick the noodle is???

Could be wrong but iirc it’s ocean trout

Funny that the board is all over this but not keen on Yess.

I am. Love Yess, at least Yess 3.0 which is the version I think we are on.

Okay, you were NOT joking about them being thick. Were they sort of pleasantly chewy?
