Loved the green chili stew last time and was debating which protein/larger dish to get instead and was between lamb or pork chop. But both are probably too big for us but I imagine I can make something outta the leftovers…
Went for the first time on Monday and sat at the counter. Standout were albacore crudo, Caesar, pickled anchovies and the pork chop. The pork chop was extremely fatty, which I appreciated, but I could imagine it being too much for some people.
scallops
albacore
hot smoked king salmon
caesar
she crab soup
pork chop
Kinda think the menu is better suited to 4 or 6 than 2. Last time I sat at the counter and didn’t get a main. @PorkyBelly’s menu is the move, possibly minus the large format meat if you aren’t hungry/looking for leftovers.
I agree that it’s better for a group but we had a killer time with the two of us tonight. This is one of my fav places in LA and I don’t even live close to it Lolol.
We went…
Tuna tartare
Duck ham
Anchovies
She Crab
Soft Shell
Cornbread
Pork
Cabbage
Cake to go.
Was it too much food? Totally. But this pork will get eaten in the morning and so will the other half of the cornbread. Also, I’m on the cornbread is not dessert team.
If I didn’t have a salad for lunch we’d have gotten the Cesar.
My guy went after it!
Chicken liver, anchovies, and scallop were excellent. Grilled veg was no good and chicory salad had good flavor but was super bitter.
Peach pie (not pictured) was overly sweet.
Pretty mid meal this time around unfortunately.
try any mains?
Nope not this time, light dinner lol
Dunsmoor can do no wrong it seems, even with a menu that changes often. Favorite dishes for me tonight: Cornish hen, grilled vegetables, tuna crudo.
scallops and hen were a bit over seasoned for me and green gage ice cream was icy, other than than that, pretty good.
bluefin tuna, bottarga, lemon, chive
kobe beef tartare, bistro-style, shoestring potato
grilled summer vegetables, squash, zucchini, eggplant, yogurt, pinenut vinaigrette
pan-roasted diver scallops, creamed corn, lime, chive
wood-roasted cornish hen, salsa verde, grilled lemon
sliced cherokee tomatoes
green gage plum ice cream
fin
Tried the Benjamin burger last night. It was very good, maybe a tad under seasoned and the bread could’ve been a bit softer/squishier to help eat the thicker construction. (Cocktails were also good)
It did make me long for the dry aged one at red hook tavern. We need a good dry aged thick boi in LA.
I was pleasantly surprised by the dry aged burger at Camelia. I wouldn’t say it blew me away, but I’d have it again.
There is also the dry aged burger at Amboy. It gets a lot of love online but I was not that impressed. I’ve been thinking about giving it a second shot since everyone else seems to love it.
had a nice dinner here on saturday - one thing I noticed in the Gjelina family tree is the love of olive oil on everything. Stuff is just drenched on veggies, on seafood, on meat etc. Does everything need to have a pool of oil at the bottom? o_O
Does everything have to have a blob of caviar on top?
probably not but it’s usually just one dish that has caviar, opposed to at gjleina/dunsmore 50%+ of the dishes have a pool of olive oil. Also most of the time you can opt out of caviar, don’t think you can opt out of a liter of olive oil on each dish
i worked foh once in fine dining and a customer opted out of any fat or salt entirely. like, sent dishes back twice bc they were cooked with oil.
the chef was very accommodating, but it definitely made the whole operation pause for a second to ponder why you’d even bother eating out if you didn’t want anything resembling the menu the chef and boh team put together.
