You may want some of these in your freezer. They are great out of the air fryer.
Does this item remind you of the fresh ones made off a street cart?
Does the coconut taste artificial?
Not as good as the ones from the cart when fresh but better than the carts not-fresh.
Thereās added taro for filler that you can taste but it also has a lot of natural coconut flavor.
Theyāre good. But I find them fiddly to heat, as they tend to come out really, really LOOSE and runny inside. I also find the taro bits off-putting.
Having said that; the flavor is great, and it would absolutely scratch the itch if I couldnāt get to Bahn Kanom Thai.
Thanks, @Ns1!
Grabbed a box this weekend and just threw it in my convection toaster oven. I love eating the crispy edges because of the texture and the nice coconut flavor. The puffs themselves were missing some textureā¦so I popped them back in the oven.
I may have to start buying them for my Mom, too.
frozen ready-to-eat chicken, lentil and caramelized onion pilaf, was produced from Nov. 1, 2023, through Jan. 19, 2024.
Been meaning to post, but I forget.
I am a big fan of TJās light sour cream. It is super thick and richā¦makes the sour cream at the regular grocery store seem a little flaccid.
I usually use Greek yogurt to make dips, but I like the TJās sour cream more.
Iāve bought their full fat sour cream-- which is pretty thick and sour (which I like), but I havenāt tried their light sour cream. Have you tried the full fat vs the lite? just curious if the flavor, body and consistency is just as good but with less fat/calories.
Iāve not had the regular version, but if I were to compare it to the crema con sal that I buy on occasion, Iād say I donāt notice much of a difference in texture or consistency.
In my house, I consider it a win if I can cut some calories here and there without anyone noticing. No oneās complained about the light sour cream so far.
For fans of the classic Drumsticksā¦ā¦ā¦

Not surprising - Aldi in Germany (which is more or less the parent company of TJ) has a quite questionable reputation of screwing off other companies through their āhouse labelsā - not really surprising that TJ is most likely using similar approaches. One of the many reasons why we donāt buy anything at Aldi or TJ
Kind of a high bullshit factor in that piece.
Achaar is the most common spelling.
Knockoffs are common in many industries. Trader Joeās also does actual private-label deals, and they stock some brand-name products.
The article does a pretty good job of explaining how private-labeling deals with small artisanal producers donāt work out and TJās ends up doing a knockoff instead. Iām not sure the comparison with Costco, Target, and Whole Foods is fair: those companies do a lot of private-label stuff, but do not have the variety of unusual house-brand products that TJās does, or the heavy turnover of trendy products. Jing Gaoās comparison to fast-fashiion brands seems spot on. Who is she to complain given that her main product is an expensive and inferior knockoff of Lao Gan Maās original?
Abraham says that had she private labeled her Lime Leaf Sambal with Trader Joeās using the original recipe, her wholesale unit cost to them wouldāve been around $7. The Thai-Style Green Chili Sauce that the company released after their negotiations stalled went on sale for a mere $2.99 ā¦
Which explains why so many of Trader Joeās products arenāt that great. I donāt see it as a reason not to shop there.
Surprised not to see anything on here about the bacalhau tartlets. Best thing in the freezer section right now. Interestingly went to the Slauson TJās last week and the portuguese custard tarts were $2.99/box for 4 and the cod tartlets, while smaller, were 8 for only $1.99.
They make for a great mini-meal. I like to call them Todd Cartletās Cod Tartlets.
Didnāt get much if any salt cod flavor, seemed like mostly potato. Nice crunchy texture.
New fave!!!
I have here and on other posts talked about how I love Trader Joeās Chile Crisp. Itās not my favorite of the genre (I prefer Zindrew and OG Chile Crunch) but still really good! So when I saw they were coming out with a chile crisp shake. OMG. I had to get it!
My least favorite part of any Chile Crisp is the oil. For a lot of dishes, especially stirfry dishes I would prefer to use Sambal as it cuts the oil from these dishes. So to get that chile crisp flavor and CRISPness without the the added oil was incredibly appealing to me.
The texture is also more substantial to Shichimi shake, another favorite topping of mine, so it lends its flavor super well to dishes!
In factā¦ the holes of this container are LARGE. Allowing you to shake quite a bit of product on to whatever you wish!
I first tried this with some Japanese Mapo Tofu I made. For the recipe I use (Just One Cookbook) I only a small amount of doubanjiang which is cut with mirin, white miso and oyster sauce. No szechuan peppercorn for this cook (when back at home I would add a small amount). So there is a bit more sweet than heat. No Mala.
When I first opened this shake, I could smell the szechuan peppercorn. So good and it added back a nice gentle heat to the dish with the chile. The reason why I like the Japanese recipe is that the gentle flavors highlight the fresh soft Meiji Tofu I go out of my way for. And this shake brought back flavors without over powering any of the ingredients.
Stillā¦. I wanted to see how it would stand up on its on and so I used it one of my favorite lunchesā¦ an Ikea Meatball cabbage and rice mix bowl!
This time I really got a sense of the shake all on its own. Againā¦ it has gentle heat. You could totally add some Sriracha to this bowl and it would be okay. After a few bites I added the Okonomiyaki sauce and it played really nice with the glazey sweetness of that.
The only thing I would note is that there really isnāt any Mala sensation with eating this. Itās mostly a fragrance and a slight cool taste. So if you are a szechuan peppercorn fiend, I would still add it to the dish.
So two big thumbs up for me. I hope it is a regular addition to their spices line up!
Wow, great review Dommy! I am sold will definitely check it out.
Hope you like it! It should be great with Ramen, Avocado Toast, Buttery Popcornā¦
Thatās a pretty cool detail
LOL!! My YEARS of MRD is showingā¦
But I had to mention it because It works really well knocking around plenty of seasoning to a bowl without going overboard (unless you want to!) I LOVE Shichimi but most bottles of that are TERRIBLE. The powder just streams out and you either add too much or too little. ugh.
